In France, almost every year, somebody really weird wins the 'Idol' show (called 'Nouvelle Star' in France, since it covers France and the French speaking zones of Belgium and Switzerland). And each time the weird person has won, it has always been the best candidate anyway. Does anybody weird win in the other countries? Ths year's weird winner.

You would be amazed to learn that two of the top stars in France are famous for their use of the ukelele -- including the winner of the Idol show 3 seasons back.

K, much better than in the UK where the one who wins is usually bland, but the runner-up usually has the best career in the long run.

Isn't it almost "normal" for an artist to be "bizarre, weird, different?

No, I have long known that the popularly accepted image (by Americans) of France as the repository of all sophistication is but a thin veneer stretched over some serious weirdness. I just read that the French idolize Mickey Rourke. Tell me it ain't so!

Bixa, you are just hearing of the French love affair with Mickey Rourke?
I had more fun watching and listening to the judges and watching the audience then I did the performers. Are the judges familiar faces/personalities outside of their place on the Idol jury?
