At lunch time, I was looking at the number of berlusconis sitting on restaurant terraces surrounded by barbies still trying to look like nymphettes.
The berlusconis are all decked out in hair dye and gel with their face lifts and salon tans, and the barbies have all changed hair color and have faces botoxed to stiffness and artificial boobs trying to break free of their constraints.
The berlusconis are still trying to live the myth that they were once attractive elsewhere than in their credit card folder and the barbies are getting their last free lunches.
I lost my appetite.

Indeed. Great image though. I'm not a Barbie and never have been, though I do colour my hair. It is at that awkward greying stage. I'll probably let it go when it gets to bixa's beautiful silver. I'm not "chromée" enough to appeal to a Berlu wannabe 20 years older, and have no interest in such very expensive "free" lunches.
You work well to the west of where you live, don't you?

Oh, Tilly ~~ I don't remember your telling that story, and I'm very grateful for it! That is exactly the kind of old lady I hope to be. Gardening keeps ones strength up both physically & mentally. Thank you for the lovely compliment, LaGatta. I identify with the when-to-stop-coloring problem. My hair went gray on top first, leaving me with a sort of dull veil over my naturally almost black hair. For ages I used one of those 6-week colorants in a slightly lighter shade than my own. Don't ever believe that those "temporary" dark colors don't become permanent over time. Thus, when I wanted to go to my new natural color, I cut first to shoulder length but still couldn't stand the two-tone effect, so chopped again. But getting rid of that heavy mop I had before was most liberating.

Oh no, that is not good. I take it she is taking advantage of the situation by the way you say it? Some people are just unbelievable.
Bixa, I also always wanted hair like that - ever since I saw Robin Hood and wanted to be Maid Marion. I got boring old straight hair and would have loved a head of amazing curls - this led to some disastrous results as a teenager when I decided a perm would do the trick ;D

Bixa is my slightly-older sister! I have hair just like that, and indeed, the grey makes it look dull if I don't colour it. So like most middle-aged dark-haired women with intellectual pretensions, I have it a bit redder than it originally was.
I had my hair cut shorter than in bixa's pic as well, but longer than bixa's current do. It is a curly bob; a good cut to wear with bérets. The mop gets a bit unruly with too much colouring and perhaps simply with ageing, though I still have lots and lots of curly hair, as bixa does.
Thick curly hair takes FOREVER to comb out, even at mid-length. Though it does make me sad to see all the curly celebs go stick-straight (I'm sure Rachel Weisz has curly hair, for one) and the little chicas copy that.

Don't forget to mention how long it takes to dry, LaGatta! The good thing about having hair like that is that it's easy to put up using just a pencil in order to get it out of your face at work. But then it remains damp and heavy next to your head all day. And the reason it's wet to begin with is because that's the only way it can be combed. Also, if you want a sleek chignon, for instance, it has to be arranged while the hair is wet. (my hair is very coarse -- don't know about the new little sister's) hair held up with pencil --> the stripe is a section that had already gone quite white. The underneath section is my frankly enviable real, original color.

I went for my semi annual physical yesterday and was pleased to hear that despite a still elevated "bad" cholesterol level (which has actually come down) I am in relatively good health. The doctor is still trying to get me to take one of the statin cholesterol lowering drugs but, I am not budging on that. So, back to the low fat diet

It's hidden in the hair.
Question about aging:
when is the part when I'm supposed to get mellow?

My hair is like Bixa's, I have never managed to grow it that long though. Even at just below shoulder length my hair takes the whole day to dry naturally in winter. And if I tie it up then it could take almost 2 days.

Well, I missed it for a while, but the main reason for growing it was because I didn't have to mess with cutting it. One reaches a point, though, where one is asking oneself if one doesn't resemble an aging Mediterranean Alice in Wonderland.

I have always been blessed with beautiful hair, even tho I permed and colored it my whole adult life. A few years ago, I began to notice that the strands in front weren't taking the color anymore, but were, in fact, solid white. So I simply let all the color grow out and I now sport a head of mostly platinum-white hair that people actually compliment me on! Think Paula Dean. I use a cream rinse for white hair and it adds a pretty sheen. I keep it well-cut and styled and am very happy with it! Who'da thunk!

Casimira;
I read your post about statins. I don't like them any more than I think you do. However, when I found several years ago that my cholestrol count was 384 and tryglicerides 784. No choice. My cardiologist is world known and he advised that I had familial high numbers (i. e. inherited). So, I have been taking them for a long time. I have done the low fat, etc but my liver just goes wild with manufacturing the stuff. I even tried going off and my count climbed very quickly. My count now hovers around 200 with medication.

My age-related complaints are pretty minor - I hate that I can't read without "cheaters" anymore, and I'm not happy with the decreasing skin tautness, now that I seem to be entering menopause. But not unhappy enough to exercise! (Yet. I might resume the phsical therapy exercises I was given a few years back for a sore shoulder, since that might firm up my upper arms.)
I have noticed some creakiness in my knees lately, though, and hope that it won't adversely affect my planned backpack trips this summer...
Thinning hair is also my cross to bear. And unlike bixa, I didn't have much to start out with. But the color is still lovely, thanks to my hairstylist!

Thanks t63,am still holding out,my numbers aren't quite that high and have indeed come down with vigorous exercise and diet although ,my love of the butter and cheese certainly could use some more restraint. It's less of a problem in the hot weather because all I really crave is fruit and vegetables and seafood,a la sushi etc. Which statin are you taking if I may ask? I did a brief trial 2-3 years ago with Crestor and I can't begin to tell you the horror my poor body went through, primarily muscle spasms and the like. I stopped taking it immediately so ,therefore, my hesitancy to reintroduce anything in that wretched family of drugs back into me.

I have to say that every woman I know who complains about thinning hair does something to her hair. Staying away from permanents, hair dryers, permanent dyes, curlers and the like will go a very long way to keeping your hair and scalp healthy.

But we'd rather LOOK healthy than BE healthy!
My only hair vice is the blonde touchup. No driers, curlers, sticky hair products, and very few clips or barrettes.

I...Staying away from permanents, hair dryers, permanent dyes, curlers and the like will go a very long way to keeping your hair and scalp healthy. I agree. While many people (especially my hairdresser) love my my thick, shiny, straight hair, it does not compare with your full, wavy locks Bixa! I do not perm or blow dry, ever. No hair products, ever. But, genetics does play a part here. My father's hair was thick and lustrous until he died. Colour? If I could look like you, or a few of my friends, with their beautiful salt and pepper, I would not color. However, my grey would be drab, not salt and pepper and, as with my mother, it would grow in strangely and very unattractively. Color and be damned!
