Canada day is just over a week away. The many free concerts will largely feature Canadian artists. No one can fill a dance floor with a crowd of crazy Canucks like these guys... The Tragically Hip have pretty much ruled the Canadian rock music scene for more than 20 years now. Here's one of their first big hits from the 80's - still a big show closing tune.

"Fill the dance floor"?? Are you kidding, Imec? Canadians don't dance. At outdoor concerts, they all bring folding chairs and sit there. Last year I went to an outdoor concert of Fela Kuti and his band in London, Ontario. The whole area in front of the stage was filled with people sitting in their Canadian Tire folding camp chairs. My son has been in Canada for 2 years now and says he has seen the same thing at any concerts he has been to in Montreal or Ottawa.

bjd, have you been talking to bbt? (Billy Bob Thornton)?
Maybe you (and your son) are going to the wrong concerts. You'll find narry a soul seated at a Hip concert -as the following video will show. (Mashed potatoes without gravy indeed!)

You're right, they're not seated -- many of them are lying down.

Another of our national treasures is Jann Arden. I thnk this is my favorite of her songs - the only video I could find of it is a tribute to some guy I gather is an actor of some sort.

Can't get enough of this song. First time I heard it was at a live performance in Vancouver. I cried.

I am mad about Diana Krall. I remember the very first time I heard her and have been smitten ever since. She's Canadian?

More Canadiana for ya - not exactly top 40 and even a bit avant garde. Very creative lady and, yes, she's 8 months pregnant in this video.

I was actually quite surprised to find this on the web. It's always been very difficult to find as it was never released commercially but only as a promo disc distributed to radio stations. Shortly after its "release" it was pretty much banned due to the controversial subject matter. It's a live version of one of their first songs, but with one of Gord Downie's trademark weird monologues inserted into the middle. It's a somewhat tense, disturbing story which has a somewhat surprising and darkly funny ending - and the song really kicks ass!
(It's not actually a video - just a soundtrack with a picture.)

Nickelback are Canadian and they're quite good!
I once went to a department store with a friend who wanted to buy a new doorbell. While we were having a look at the newest models he wandered off without me noticing. I thought he was still standing beside me and gave the person standing beside me an elbow in the ribs and asked 'this one has a chime called "Oh Canada", want to listen?'. You can imagine his surprise...
