I just listened to a great program on CBC radio featuring "The Gayest Music of All Time". Music by the openly gay (e.g. George Michael), the not do openly gay (e.g. Freddie Mercury), the not gay but favored by gays (e.g. Abba) and female performers associated with the gay lifestyle (e.g. Liza Minelli).
Do you listen to "gay music"? Do you avoid it? Do you recognize it as such? I've got quite a bit of it in my collection, here's one of my faves:

Some of it I like and some of it I don't -- for example, I have always liked Pet Shop Boys but have rarely liked things by Boy George or Jimmy Somerville.

I loved a lot of the Culture Club stuff (some of it stunk) and I think this is brilliant (produced by the PSBs I believe) (the guitar reminds me of Chris Isaak)

I Listen to a lot of gay/bi music. I love Jimmy Sommerville and Boy George ! One of my favourite voices: Brian Molko, singer of Placebo, don't know if he's bi or gay but definitely not straight.

I don't generally pay any attention to who is what orientation, but it was mentioned by the person who turned me on to this fabulous voice:

I should mention in passing that today was the Gay Pride parade in Paris, about 500,000 people with Liza Minelli and the (gay) mayor of Paris as guest stars. I almost went to take photos, but I went once about 10 years ago and decided that it does not photograph well. (Either you get totally normal photos of totally normal people which is the totally normal thing to do, or else you go after the wild and extravagant shots which I personally do not feel are very representative of the gay people I know.)

Who cares if the composer/artist is gay or not? Some music is great, some isn't. ;-)

I listen to it all. I know gays love Abba, but I always thought that Freddie Mercury was openly gay, no? I was quite surprised to find out that George Micheal was gay though, shame, I ways fancied him.

For most if not his entire career, he hid the fact (and I don't know why) that he was Indian - a Parsi.

Crikey, it looks like Freddie Mercury was Indian, (Gujarati), too. I had heard this before, but had forgotten all about it. I wonder why he would want to hide that fact? Unless he was so far removed from his roots that he didn't occur or matter to him anymore. There's more about it on here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury

George Michael is of Indian descent? I thought his background was Greek.
I didn't know Freddie Mercury tried to hide the fact that he was Indian. I didn't know until I read Deyana's link that he didn't move to England until he was 17.

Not George Michael - Freddie Mercury. I don't think it was made public until after his death.

The last thing I think of when listening to music is sexual orientation. Never, really. I loved Freddie Mercury and while I knew he didn't acknowledge being gay, I was aware that he was Indian. I don't think this was a secret.
