I'm curious about the drinking water in different places. Here in NOLA our water comes from the Mississippi and goes through a water purification process. Supposedly,it's safe to drink. It doesn't taste bad although ,right after Katrina there was a pretty strong chlorine odor which they seem to have figured out and dealt with. I drink the municipal tap water for the most part but often wonder if I shouldn't put one of those purifiers on my faucet anyway. There are plenty people that I know that only drink bottled water and have it delivered to their homes. The water in NY is also deemed safe but my mother swears that in the last ten years it has been tainted and will only drink bottled water so when I visit I go along with her. Where does your drinking water come from and is it considered safe?

Our water is a combination of ground water and CAP water. This stands for Central Arizona Project. The water comes from the Colorado River. Yes it is safe to drink. However, we are in an ongoing battle with California for Colorado River water and it is going to be interesting to see what is going to happen in the next few years.

Southern California is desperate for any water right now.

our water is supposed to be good. they did a test a few years ago, and it was better than most bottled water sold in supermarkets.

St. Louis water comes from Mississippi River, is rated some of the best water in the country and tastes good. Drink it all the time.

I only drink tap water in Paris, but I see people lugging giant packs of bottled water at the store all the time.

I only drink tap water too. It is healthy and tastes good even though where I live it has a fair bit of chalk(?) in it which makes the pans go white. In our old house in the mountains, the tap water tastes better than any bottled water you can get.

I always wonder about cities like Evian -- 1. Do people there buy bottled Evian? 2. What are the sales of the competing water brands there?

I also drink tap water, which comes from rivers nearby. My husband likes fizzy water in summer, but I hate lugging bottles so don't buy it often. In Paris, we have one of those Britta filters for the tap water, which is hard and I find has an odd taste.

Edinburgh (where I am right now) tap water is incredibly good, particularly at my Folks house on the South Side. All that rain does come in handy for something

I am very bad about drinking water, but when I do, I drink tap water. I do have a brita filter jug which I use when I remember to, and when I remember to replace the filter. It does make a difference to the water, I can see it in the kettle, needs no descaling from using filtered water.
Tap water here has always been safe, but we have had a few scares in some of the other provinces recently.

I usually drink tap water "St-Laurent frappé"; it is fine here. I like the taste better if it sits for a while. I do like fizzy water when I'm very thirsty in the summer, but it is just for the bubbles. There are certain mineral waters which I enjoy as beverages, but certainly don't buy them every day.

We used to get bottled water home delivery but Mr. C. was always skeptical about it's origins and sure enough there was an expose some years back about one of the major local companies selling bottled water from the tap or at least when tested had the exact chemical, mineral components. In Mississippi in some areas ,the water has a high sulphur content and smells horrible. It is known as "egg water"The first time I smelled it I was nauseous.I can't imagine ever getting used to it.

I have always drank tap water wherever I lived, but maybe I shouldn't be so trusting... For a few years in my childhood I lived in a rural area and drank water that came from a well. Years later it was found to have unsafe levels of arsenic in it. (There's not much I can do about it now; I may have higher risks for some cancers.) And Milwaukee became famous a few years ago when we had what was "the largest waterborne disease outbreak in documented US history". I was living here then, but I didn't get sick. Here's some information about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee_Cryptosporidium_outbreakI actually trust the water even more now, because I figure my city's going to be especially careful now. But like I said maybe I'm too trusting.

I drink tap water however I suspect it has traces of heavy metals in it including high levels of aluminium which is used to purify it. To make matters worse the water company adds fluoride to the water even though people object to drinking it.

Isn't the fluoride for the teeth, SD?

Fluoride is contained in about 60% of US drinking water and is very controversial. Opponents of it say that it can be toxic at certain levels and can cause dental fluorosis which prevents healthy formation of tooth enamel(especially dangerous for children),potential hypothyroidism and is a possible carcinogenic. Proponents deny this and dismiss it as alarmism by "whacky" watch dog groups. Who to believe?

We have our own well. It tastes just wonderful, the best water I've ever tasted. We do have it tested once in while to make sure it's up to standards etc.
