Of course, 'irrational' and 'paranoid' are basically redundant.
When something is missing or suddenly different from what you were certain it should be, do you get weird, ridiculous flashes?
They generally only last about 5 seconds, but it can still be intense.
For example, this last week at the hotel, my apartment keys were suddenly missing from the room.
Instant paranoid flash: The cleaning personnel have taken the keys and sent them to their burglar accomplices in Paris, because my address is on file at the hotel!
Reality: the keys were under a sheet of paper on the desk.

Then there's that nice guilt that follows your mentally having broken the eighth commandement. Of course I know that for having had many of those paranoid flashes. There is also the paranoid flash against yourself. Can't find the rent money? Paranoia doesn't let you think a moment & remember where you put it. Instead you're convinced that you stuck it in the pages of a library book that you returned a week and a half ago.

A very wise friend of mine told me that my mind was very often a very dangerous place to go. Sometimes this works when I find myself about to "go there".

As one gets older, we have what is called a senior moment but those can quickly morph into a flash of paranoia. Deep breathe, and rational thought does come back. We all now what we think secretly and that is another flash of irrational paranoia.

Once I truly had filed the plane tickets in my wastebasket, though. Luckily I had tossed the envelope just the day or so before frantically searching for them on the eve of the flight, and they were still there: the last place I looked.
At other times my mind has immediately turned to hired help as guilty of what always turned out to be my own carelessness.

Driving our new corvette to work for the first time and coming home, tried to start it and couldn't. Panicking because I knew if I had to call the hubby, he would not be a happy camper. Taking a deep breath, and remembered, it was a 6 speed manual and you have to put the clutch in to get it to start. Another paranoid flash when I couldn't find the key, oops, has no key, you start it with a push button.

I have also been known automatically to blame my husband when something is amiss. Then I'll realize he's blameless and turn around and do it again the next time.

Mr Star recently brought the paper home to show me a cartoon that apparently was me.
"Where is my mobile? Shit I bet the postman took it when I was getting a pen, or it was Lisa...she has always liked my phone. Ha, bet my dead mother just came back from the grave to hide it, the bitch. No, I bet Jack put it somewhere to spite me....oh...there it is"

I had to go get about 10,000€ in cash at the bank yesterday (for the office), which is not a habitual task for me, but I didn't give it a second thought until I stupidly walked out on the street holding the bulging envelope and suddenly every single person on the street looked like a potentially dangerous criminal who could see right through the envelope.

Funny, Tilly.
And yours, too, Kerouac. I was starting to picture Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life accidentally misplacing his bundle of cash.

You mean like the sudden, painful sensation Kerouac will feel on the back of his head when Tilly catches up with him?
