I think that the first Motown song to which I ever paid attention was this one.
I didn't even like it all that much (I still don't), but I understood that something very different was happening in music.

I don't know if I would consider Lionel Richie to be Motown, though, just as I don't put Michael Jackson in that category, even if the Jackson 5 started there.

I don't think Michael Jackson is the motown sound, ditto Lionel Richie. For that matter, I consider Wilson Pickett to be more southern soul/r&b sound. Motown was more northern with a more "produced" sound.
