I just saw a mouse run across the floor. I fought them years ago, but this is the first one I've seen in almost 3 years. It is all well and good to live in a building that was built more than 200 years ago, but this is the sort of problem that you can never completely get rid of.
This is probably the "fault" of the renovation company that has been redoing one side of the building. Obviously they filled cracks and repaired fissures, redid the gutters and things like that. So they probably blocked a mouse passage and sent the critters into my place.
Out come the traps again tomorrow, but I hope I don't have to buy any of the glue sheets, because those things are truly disgusting when they work and you can see how those cute little ratatouilles suffered trying to drag themselves out of the glue.

There's a place that I go very early in the morning to get ice for my little ice chest that I take to work with me. The clean up guy is there and lets me in. Anyway, they have been overrun with the larger rodent of late due to major street repairs and sewer work. One large one could be heard squealing Monday a.m. stuck on one of those sticky pads. I couldn't bear to look ,the squeal was bad enough. Why don't you get a cat K? You seem to be fond of them.

I love cats, but I used to travel quite a bit before my wings were clipped 5 years ago. I hope to travel again some day, so I can't really plan on getting a cat.

I feel for you. Really, it was worth moving this time to get away from the mice. They would come in from the field behind the house and ruined a couple of things with their nasty nibbling. And they will pee & poo profusely if they find a nook where you can't get at them.

I don't have mice either. But we're careful about where to keep food and snacks. Never outside the fridge. The rubbish is outside the house. Hell, we don't even have cockroaches!

Seriously, a dear friend of mine, insanely frightened to death of mice ,got them ,and they (as Jazz said,"never one") set up house in of all things ,her antique dollhouse with all her Beatrix Potter collection etc. Fastidious clean freak. Anyway, she BORROWED her friend's cat and that's how she got rid of them.

A mouse story:
(I got this from my son's nursery school teacher)
The teacher was reading a story to the children during quiet time. There was a mousie in the story. Son of Bix got all excited and wanted to say something. Finally the teacher let him, whereupon he blurted out, "My mom was cooking and she opened the oven and there was a mouse in there and she said oh god damn and slammed the oven door."
