Commonly heard phrase referring to the obvious; never leaving to go out without what precious, vital or in some cases superfluous item?
I rarely if ever carry a purse these days if I can help it. I have several small pouch like cross the shoulder "bags" that I use. The contents include, keys, eyewear,ID,cellphone and lipstick. Added to this in the past year is a small pillbox with 3 aspirin in the off event my defective heart choose to skip a few beats. (I was scared into this by a friend who had a cardiac "episode" and the Dr. told her had she not ingested the aspirin at the time she did she would probably be 1/2 paralyzed).

I never go anywhere without my nose spray. No I am not addicted to it but sometimes the mucosa (?) in my nose swells up and I can get really bad heacaches from the pressure. So instead of having to take a painkiller I just pump a little bit of spray up my nose and all is fine.

I never go anywhere without clean tissues in my hip pocket in case there is a lady in distress.

You the man Baz! I remember well my knight in shining armour. I got on the train and sat down and burst into tears having just been made redundant from a job I loved. I was covered in snot and tears and a lovely man came over and gave me a couple of tissues. That was about 10 years ago but the thought of his kindness makes me smile still I never go anywhere without a book.

I inherited an arsenal of small evening bags from my mother in law and every one of them had a (clean) pressed handkerchief inside. I remembered my own mother's words on my way out the door to go anywhere, didn't matter,"don't forget to take some Kleenex".

In Southeast Asia, I always have toilet tissue (usually purchased in Bangkok or Saigon) and become an instant hero when the bus stops at a sordid place. For some reason, Dutch know-it-all-I've-been-everywhere women who claim they've been on the road for the last 4 months are the ones needing the toilet tissue. Perhaps it is just a pick-up line, in which case they may be lesbians because women only ask other women for such items. I only offer it by overhearing their desperate questions.

Actual currency, Seriously, most people I know carry a debit card and credit cards. My grandmother always told me always have a half of a tank of gas in the car and $50.00 in your wallet.

That is a very true necessity -- and coins whenever possible, or at least very small bills when visiting 'difficult' countries. If I have to get money out of an ATM when arriving somewhere, if I have absolutely no local currency, I break some of it down as quickly as possible to meet upcoming complications.

A girl should always carry mad money. If she gets mad with her date she has enough cash to take a taxi home.

I learned how to do without toilet paper while travelling in Iran. I even wrote a detailed post on this delicate subject on another forum.

I never go on a trip without a pocket knife - I usually forget to put it in my check-in luggage and it is seized at the security check.

re: toilet paper. Nothing looks more like a roll of toilet paper, nor takes up more clunky space than a roll of toilet paper. Kleenex is also disposable tissue, and so much more discreet than The Roll.

re: toilet paper. Nothing looks more like a roll of toilet paper, nor takes up more clunky space than a roll of toilet paper. Kleenex is also disposable tissue, and so much more discreet than The Roll. Oh, you are so literal. Normally it is a flat package of toilet paper, but if it isn't, I crush it. Do you think I would leave a round empty tube of unusable space?

Dear Sir:
I regret I cannot answer your query at this time as the way it was phrased caused me to think of, and then to squelch too many possible replies.
Sincerely,
Saint Bixa the Restrained

Since I started traveling without my parents I've always had a toilet bag in my baggage. It holds a bar of soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, a small sewing kit, some safety pins, aspirin and immodium, a pair of chopsticks, a spoon and a knife and a flattened roll of toilet paper. Sometimes my cash reserve. Cigarettes and lighter are always in my pants pockets

I never leave the house without a pen and a small notebook; as a writer, you never know when inspiration is going to strike. Doubly so when I am on the road.
All other packing is reflected by what conditions I'll tend to encounter on the road.

Obviously all travellers have heard of The Man in Seat 61 (if not, google immediately). His motto is: Always travel with a good book and a corkscrew.
Sound man.

I presume that in the future I will no longer make a voyage without my Asus EEE netbook, even if my gigantic fingers are not used to the size of the keyboard yet.

man in seat 61 was always one of the high points on the Thorn Tree. And he always answered our questions! Wish we could get him to come over here as well. I love trains.
Yes, I have to get a netbook. I can scarcely write by hand any more. nic, I always used to have a notebook and pen. Still do, but nowadays I have a much better "flow" with the computer - the words just flow from my fingers onto the screen...

I can't "think" on a computer screen. Plus, for those of us who travel with one-bag, the added weight of a netbook is a turn off in addition to all the other fun things like theft, spilling water on it, can't throw your bag into the back of a truck.
