I was thinking that we could post random photos of places that we have been that had just too many people during the summer tourist season. (Personal photos of yours only, not things gleaned off the internet, please.) Just for a start, here is a photo of the beach at Berck-sur-Mer (France) in mid-summer. It is on the English Channel, so it is about as far from a fashionable French beach resort as you can get, attracting exclusively working class people from the surrounding region. But there are a lot of them!

What always gets me about crowded beach scene pictures is that everyone acts as though it's all swell -- that they're not standing around a hot, sandy place more crowded than where they wait for public transit when they're working.

That just killed my long-held desire to visit Venice.

Bixa:
No, no no!!!!! Don't let this influence you, Venice is wonderful!!!!! I wasn't to keen to go but Kirk talked me into it and I do not for one minute regret it. I would go back and I didn't think that would happen.

Yeah? That's a relief. It's not totally impossible that I might have the opportunity one day. Besides, I was rather crushed to have my fantasy uh, crushed.

That just killed my long-held desire to visit Venice. Don't go in the Summer. Sure, the weather isn't as lovely, but I really enjoy Venice in the Winter -- January or February. You can actually throw a rock and not immediately hit a tourist! A lot of places are closed too, but that's just more incentive to delve deeper into Venice.

Bixa, I spent a week in Venice in October and it was magical. Go, if only once. There are two wonderful day trips, one to Murano, the island where they make superb glass, and Burano, the island of the lacemakers. I wouldn't go near the place in July or August.

Has anyone gone during Carnival? One always reads about it. I wouldn't want to go if it was real crazy like here. More a romantic idea maybe.

This is the queue of people just waiting to get into Notre Dame at 11:00 a.m. today. I'm sure it got a lot worse later in the day.
