Great picture, Cheery & the garden netting is perfect for showing her real size.

Wow,there are some really cool photos in here!!! this caterpilllar munching away on Passiflora will eventually metamorphasize into ...... a Gulf Frittilary butterfly.

Dung beetles in action - the female clings on for the ride on while the male pushes their ball home ( backwards)! They like elephant dung best.

They always remind me of Sisyphus.

So many img bnk topics, this one had escaped my attention way back to Mick's darling little toad.
Casimira, those are wonderful and informative shots. I know the Gulf fritillary, but had no idea how its caterpillar looked.
Clever dung beetles & clever Tod to capture their labors!
Re: Sisyphus & thus other myths ..... didn't the ancient Egyptians have a belief about dung beetles? I'm thinking it had something to do with the sun's transit across the sky, but don't really know.

We're all familiar with frog spawn but this photo reveals another clever type of froggie: He/she lays the eggs in this foamy frothy protective shell and as the tadpoles develop they drop right into their home territory!

That is clever! Imagine the frog mother looking for just the right overhanging branch, then laying the eggs on just the right part of it.

Bixa, how did you spot this little beauty - a Mexican Treefrog (Smilisca baudinii) - They are so tiny?!

Wow -- thank you for that identification, Tod! Those little guys hang around the outside tap. I have a huge plastic colander -- that's the rim of it in the picture. I'd washed some chard outside & left it dripping over a bucket. Later, when it was dark, I went to retrieve it & set the colander on the outside table. I was fluffing & shaking the chard when Froggy jumped out & sat blinking in the light.

Do they sing bixa?

Post by tod2 on Dec 29, 2011 12:03:26 GMT
Kimby, I listened to a recording on a website - sorry can't remember the name, but they seem to 'chirp' in a chorus sounding way. Each trying to outdo the other I guess!

Reason I asked is that the Cuban tree frogs that have outcompeted the local native tree frog in Florida sing in a cacaphony that keeps us awake if we are there when they are mating.

Kimby, they must make some kind of call, but I've never heard them. I do know how various frogs sound, but these are sure silent.

I know they that they do indeed belong on this thread, but I have never considered frogs to be crawling creatures.

I think this thread pre-dates Image Bank. With foresight, it could have been one thread for insects and spiders and another for reptiles and amphibians.

Spotted outside my bedroom window on Sunday. I think they are wasps but noticed they kept flying back and forth from this 'nest'. Seems they were either eating something or sealing up the holes - I can see a tiny egg in each cavity.

Cool picture, Tod. I love how naturally elegant wasps are.

"elegant" is not the "e-word" I would use, bixa! Evil is more like it, in my book.

They have a tendency to build their nests in MY business, though! I make Mr. Kimby get rid of them. Not going near them. No way!
