Legendary speechwriter and columnist William Safire passed two days ago. While I did not agree with his politics I was a huge fan of his NY Times magazine column that he wrote for about three decades;On Language. A brilliant mind.

Yes, I always loved his language columns. Since I am very conservative about language, we probably saw eye to eye on the subject.

I went to hear him at Washington U some years back. Witty, amusing speaker. He talked about the pronunciation of Loo uh vul, KY, where he had just been, and said he was glad to be in "Saint Loo uh." He wisely kept politics out of it.
