The 4th of October is World Animal Day. I'm posting this in ecology as the day is not just about companion animals but also wildlife protection and the welfare of farm and working animals: www.worldanimalday.org.uk/index.asp The 4th of October was chosen as it is the feast day of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, but it is a day for people of all faiths and none, and is celebrated on all continents.

Thanks, LaGatta. It's sad and appropriate that this story about walruses appeared in the news today. side note: look at the gibberish in italics at the bottom of the article. guess the NYTimes no longer proofreads.

I'm sorry to read that. Of course here we read a lot about the threat to polar bears, but I hadn't read or heard anything about threats to walruses due to global warming/ climate change.
I'm very surprised that there is still no coastal ice up there by October.
