American photographer Irving Penn, best known for his "less is more" fashion photography and portraiture died at the age of 93. He also did a wonderful series on Flowers. portrait of Pablo Picasso

He was a monument. The other day, after reading the Harcourt thread, I went online looking at the work of contemporary portrait photographers. Penn's influence is pronounced in so many of them. Steve Pyke's work in particular seems to be a complete homage to Penn's portraits. ObituaryPutting "Irving Penn" into google images renders an astounding number of wonderful, compelling pictures.
