Thanks for reminding me about cardamom; I have some leftover and will but it in that ground turkey and flat cabbage dish I'm making. I don't think I'll put mushrooms in - perhaps red peppers for colour, but I don't want too many things in it. I'll walk to Marché oriental and buy some herbs and a little tin of some kind of red curry - the panang would be ideal.

I use cardamom quite often, generally the full pods rather than the powder (although I have a little jar of that, too). I like the surprise explosion of unexpected flavour when biting into a pod, and it is very much an acquired taste to which I warmed up slowly earing Pakistani food. Oddly enough, my last 500g bag of pods which I bought in an Indian supermarket comes from Guatemala.
My Pakistani colleague taught a number of us that it is also excellent to put cardamom pods in one's teapot.

Indian chai isn't proper chai unless it has cardamom in it.

Tonight was all leftovers, in this case boiled cabbage and boudin blanc. I'm glad it's out of the way now.

Lamb steaks. Looked delicious. Totally tasteless.

The flavour has been completely been bred out of lamb. I wish that adult mutton were available to get some of the taste back. In the meantime, I sometimes use mutton bouillon cubes imported from North Africa to get a bit of flavour from time to time.

I had Thai brown rice, pickled Laotian vegetables and fried Vietnamese fish paste (but made in France). I had never tried this fish paste before. It is sold in a vacuum bag and looks like a long strip of fried tofu. You are supposed to deep fry it and then slice it. I was surprised that it expands to about triple its size. Anyway, I thought it tasted pretty good -- actually not a great deal of flavour but the satisfaction of "deep fried" when you know that it is bad for you. The only problem is that now I have a big piece left over and I don't know if it will appeal to me again in the next day or two.

We have roasted dindonneau (some kind of small turkey hence the name in french) with chicons (white leaves erroneously called endives in french) with croquettes (lashed patatoes fried). The wine should have been a Zinfandel then I remembered Trump recommends US wines so I bought a Greek one. Not by best idea.

I was going to put a roast of beef into the oven but have given in to absolute laziness after a night of poor sleep. So I put the beef into the crock pot with some carrots, celery, onion, garlic, salt and pepper. It will be ready around 10:00 p.m. I will let it cool and will make something of it tomorrow.

I have some leftover côte de boeuf, so I will be improving a Thai beef salad. If I manage anything edible, it should be amazing because I don't even have bean sprouts on hand. But I have plenty of fresh chillies, so the fire will mask the missing ingredients.

Cooked the most delicious piece of beef...I don't cook as much red meat as I used to..but today's meal was a triumph. I don't think I've ever got the meat so tender, so flavorsome and so BEEFY! The roast potatoes, little Yorkshire puddings, spicy red cabbage, carrots and peas with a rich gravy sauce...dribble dribble...
And
I made sticky ginger cake pudding and home made custard...I'll never be thin....

Abandoned my Thai salad plans for Vietnamese nems. They were fine, but such an ordinary dish in Paris (like some of those Indian dishes in London). My Thai beef salad has been moved to tomorrow.

Tonight I had spaghetti with spicy lamb meatballs (reduced to 2 euros because of an imminent expiration date), capiscum tomato sauce in a jar which said to use by mid-2018, white mushrooms (called 'champignons de Paris' in France) from the Netherlands, chopped parsley, and with roquefort crumbled on top because I had no grated cheese on hand. It was excellent.

As I was at a posh farm shop on Monday I picked up a steak and stilton pie...expensive but divine. I could probably make one myself but their pastry is absolutely fabulous...really 'short' if you know what I mean. £8 for 2 medium pies (each serves 2...3 at a pinch) bargain. We had the pie with brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli florets and creamed potato.

I actually had a ham and cheese sandwich for dinner. I can't remember the last time I ever did such a thing, but I did not feel like cooking.

went to the advent celebration at church and had lots of sweets. then, after the evening service, sausages and bread with butter (and mulled wine) was offered. i only had bread and mulled wine - so now i am hungry again, but it is kind of late to eat, so i have to wait until tomorrow ...

In defiance to the season, tonight I had a big salad of watercress, cucumber, shallots, cherry tomatoes and radishes. Feeling that it was lacking in nutrition, I cut up some stinky cheese on top. In any case, it was delicious with a mustard vinaigrette and completely filled my stomach. Unfortunately, my body is already saying that dinner was inappropriate and that something else is required.

Steak was on sale today so since we are having a break in the weather, -1C at the moment, my husband will BBQ them and I will make some french fries.

Since I don't like burgers or pizza or even sandwiches most of the time, I have to stock a few emergency rations to eat at home when I am in no mental or physical condition to prepare an actual meal.
So tonight I popped the package of canard parmentier into the microwave and was faced with the horror of it just 3 minutes later. This is actually a good thing because it teaches me what to not ever buy again. I had no difficulty eating it, but it didn't taste like duck and it didn't even taste like potatoes. I don't know what it actually tasted like, but it was warm and it was dinner time. Probably it is pretty close to "astronaut food" where they use real products and then remove all taste from it so as not to offend anybody.
