Just about all of us are guilty of this, one way or another. I'm not too bad at respecting coupon and gift certificate deadlines, but I am catastrophic about consuming food or liquid treasures in time.

We "saved" a whole dozen assorted bottles of pretty good wine in less-than-ideal storage conditions (but on their sides in a rack) until when we finally started drinking them they were pretty horrible.

Yes, that's the big problem with these special items. We think that we are unworthy of them or something.

Indeed. Who hasn't discarded handmade food gifts?
You know what? I have received a good bottle of wine as a present for catsitting (a very demanding, ill, cat). I think I'll open the bottle tonight. No, I don't anticipate drinking it all - no desire to get sloshed. Still mulling this over. I do have some good cheese.

LaGatta, it is so funny reading a food post by you with the intent black cat licking his lips right next to your words.

Well, I definitely allowed my free first class ticket to London to expire.

Kerouac, can't you get a letter from the hospital/nursinghome saying your mother was ill and therefore you need an extension of time on the ticket? Or do you get more during the year

an friend once brought me lots of cans of root beer (which i love but can't get here - well maybe i could in special shops but then it would cost loads and somehow not be the same) and i drank one every now and then to reward myself for something. except for the last one. that one is still unopened, several years later.

I saved and saved and saved a little pint jar of fig preserves, part of the last batch my grandmother ever made. She'd made it at least two or three years before she died, but I still hoarded it for another couple after she died. It was really good, but every bite caused a lump of nostalgia in my throat.

The last bottle of mirabelle brandy that my parents made in 1981 before leaving France must have lasted at least 15 years.
At least one advantage of old brandy is that it can never go bad.
