Just had to share, was in a local store tonight and while walking out, there was a family with a little girl who appeared to be about 6 or 7. I was half catching snippets of the conversation between her and her mother... and I kept hearing her exclaim something over and over... at first I did not get it... but then it dawned on me... she was saying: OH- EM - GEE (as in OMG/oh my god) but she was just chanting the internet/text speak abbreviation. I guess I'm getting old but when children start using that as regular language in regular conversations, I think it's yet another sign the apocalypse is near.. ETA: Not sure if this belongs in P&S because it's a rant or the language area?

I suppose I am really showing my age but this stuff annoys me. Especially the new version of the English 'language' that is being adopted because of texting. I have had young relatives email me and ask, "how r u?' Is it that hard to type four extra letters in there to spell actual words? I also phoned a friend the other day on his mobile and missed him. He sent me a text message later saying, " saw u called, do u need 2 talk 2 me?" (Uh, yeah, I guess I did, I called, didn't I?)

I am part of the elderly brigade that always writes out text messages in full. I have noticed that everybody in my age group feels the same way about it. The only problem is that 99% of our text messages are not to these young people who need to be retrained but to people of our own generation!
However, I do keep in touch with a young girl (age 23?) who is the daughter of a retired colleague. She writes to me for relief from her clueless parents since I generally validate her opinion of what is happening (she fled to Australia about 9 months ago and guess where her parents decided to go on holiday?). This girl, with a valid university degree, I do wonder if she knows how to write French properly, because her emails look just like text messages.

This- text or SMS speak- is universal in all languages I think now. Have you ever tried to send a text of any length on your mobile phone? And kids send hundreds of these a week. I can hardly blame them for shortcutting. I only send them from my computer where I can use a full size keyboard which is sufficiently challenging for me. Plus they're free that way.

Good. I'm glad you don't. CBA = Can't be Arsed.
