I just heard on the radio this morning that New Jersey has joined the ranks in legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. How is this treated in other countries here on the board?

Not another country, though sometimes seems like it, but Montana has legalized Medical Marijuana by a voter-initiated referendum several years ago. There are now more than 1000 legal providers of marijuana to patients who have cleared the application process.
If you are a patient, you can grow 6 plants and have on hand 1 oz of dried weed. If you are a provider, you can have enough plants and weed to serve 6 patients (i.e. 36 plants and 6 oz. of weed). A physician's prescription is required, and doctors can't be busted for prescribing it for any number of complaints, including pain, loss of appetite, problems sleeping, etc.

I don't know, Casimira. I don't enjoy it any more. It makes me feel nauseous. It used not be like that.

It sometimes affects me in a terrible manner, so I avoid it nowadays. I think it affects everyone a little differently, so if someone finds it helpful for whatever reason, I have no problem with them using it.
Funny spindrift, because it's supposed to be an anti-nausient.

is it? I didn't know that. In the distant past I was only affected by nausea as a side-effect if I combined it with alcohol. Twice I became paralysed this way. That's why I never drink port. It was after a dinner party. oh yes and once whilst taking a bath. at least I had the use of my voice and I was able to call for someone to renew the hot water. no-one could lift me out being just a dead weight.

It's actually a great medicine where efficacious because it is uniquely safe and non-toxic. There is no other drug known, either therapeutic or recreational, with no known lethal overdose and with so few serious side effects. Aspirin or ibuprofen by comparison are both very dangerous.

Have you heard of tincture of cannabis? I don't know if it's still around. It used to be prescribed for depressives but I got a teaspoon now and then if I was a good girl ;D. It was great stuff, most efficacious.

I don't know the ins and outs of getting it for medical reasons in the UK but my good friend has MS and she gets it illegally (well she did before but now she has the excuse...) I asked her the other day if she could get it prescribed. She said that they only prescribe the mouth spray - and she isn't entitled to that as it is only for certain symptoms, particularly muscle spasms which she does not have.
My MiL has Lupus and didn't smoke it before she was diagnosed but she finds it helps the pain and also increases her appetite. Spindrift, if you tried it without alcohol it might help with appetie loss you mention on your other thread!
I stopped smoking it as it doesn't effect me nicely at all anymore, makes me feel an impending doom like I have forgotten to do something important.

I'm in the nausea, doom & brood camp, but apparently it's helpful in some situations. I'm only weighing in here to say that as I was scrolling up the main page, I read the title of this thread as "Medical Margarita". We should discuss that, too.

A friend of mine has MS too. He buys it on the street.
I find it a bit boring, everybody starts giggling at 9pm, everybody goes to sleep at 10pm.

It does work for nausea no doubt, but, I only needed a puff or two.I think alot of people think you have to get swacked whenever you smoke it. I have tried the legal issue stuff and it is like a 2x4 over your head if you take too much. I was immobilized, worthless and totally incapacitated. I did not enjoy it at all.

I had to smile when on the ski shuttle bus last weekend a loud-mouthed full of himself young stud was complaining that usually the 4:30 shuttle was all potheads, but that day there were lots of non-users aboard. I refrained from saying "sonny, I was smoking pot before you were born!"
Many years ago, before they started growing the really powerful stuff, pot was fun to mess around with. The stronger it got, though, the stranger the experience, with unpleasant moments of paranoia and self-consciousness. Had to give it up, but still have fond recollections of college days.

Actually, a few times I've had a strange reaction where I get really pale and feel like I'm going to faint. I actually have to sit down and let my head settle, before walking a few steps, and then sitting down again. I remember walking into my friend's house in this state and she said "Oh my god, your lips are blue!" I don't think this is a common reaction, but it sure is scary. Somebody told me it was like my blood pressure dropped... strange.
