why are they constantly refering to the cat as puss? does one still do that? isn't that as if in german one would still call a cat muschi?

Not quite.
Children in English speaking countries don't have that connotation AFAIK. 'Puss in Boots' is 'Der Gestiefelte Kater, children still learn that tale in school.

yeah but i assumed that in oldfashioned texts it is still common but not in modern language... but i guess i was wrong. i just can't help giggling every time i read it though...
