Mich. I love this thread because it brings the best out of us. I am sure what the nurses did was just their duty or their job but you saw more. And you are so right. They do more than just their job. And thank you for seeing it and saying it.

Mich, your nurse has probably gone of duty and shed tears for a patient on many occasions. When my trainee group was at our first lecture we were told that nursing is never just a job. "You will laugh a lot, cry a lot, swear a lot but you will never be bored".

Indeed Questa, I am sure they shed many tears. Sitting in the unit for a couple hours waiting for my procedure, there were patients from babies to the elderly there for a variety of issues so I can understand how they would also never be bored.
Whatagain, it was comforting to watch as all were processed with care, dignity, tenderness and a helping hand when needed.

I wrote two letters with a fountain pen this morning. Felt quite proud of myself.

Which letters were they? Upper or lower case? Print or cursive?

a couple of non-working hours with the apartment all to myself, a bath without anyone coming into the bath room ...

Having sisters, now that I don’t have parents. (A big thing, actually, but easily taken for granted.)

I have been approved for the free Paris travel pass for indigent oldies. This is going to save me about 800 euros year.

I think they are free in Paris, non? Mostly so homeless people will "go" there rather than in public...
Whatagain, why would Belgian taxes go to a Parisian travel-card scheme?

At the annual building owners' meeting tonight, our newest member asked if we would mind if he put potted plants on the landings in front of the windows. We all said that it was a great idea even though most of us suspect that it is to console himself after just breaking up with his husband. They've only been living here for about 4 months.

Opposite the windows in my apartment is a @8 story building. Every evening around this time a blackbird(?) perches on top of it, singing his little heart out.

Listening to a blackbird "singing his little heart out" is one of the most beautiful things on the planet. We have a couple of species of magpies and currawongs that have glorious songs as well. Apart from trills, chortles and glissandos, they can make echo effects like guitars use feedback.

Oh, I would love to hear* those birds, Questa! The first time I heard blackbirds was in England and I couldn't believe the beauty of their song. I asked around and finally someone identified the bird, but in the tone of "only" a blackbird. It's hard to imagine anyone being blasé about that wonderful song.
*While writing the above, it occurred to me that I could hear them via youtube. Yes, they're incredible song stylists!

Blackbirds are very common here too, but their song is particularly noticeable in spring when they start to warble as the days start getting longer.

I received the refund from my hacked credit card. It's always nice to see 500 euros appear on one's bank account.

Purty birds, Questa! Ha ha, Kerouac ~ that money must seem like a bonus, even though it was yours all along. I am extremely happy about my little thing that means a lot. Really, it's two little things. My plane doesn't leave Amsterdam until 10:35 at night, so I didn't want to have to check out of this apartment at a normal check-out time. I asked the landlord, and he said that sure, I could stay until @8 or so, but would it be okay if the cleaning lady came by at noon that day to change the beds, etc. I replied that of course the lady could come if that's what he wanted, but I was perfectly capable of changing the linen, leaving the place clean and all that. So a few minutes ago I heard back from him. He says if I'm willing to do that, he will take me to the airport. Yessssssssss!!!

"If there was a major accident and only one of you survived, who would I prefer it to be? .....You!"
I think that would work.

Seeing Mark posting in here. Also, being asked by a neighborhood retirement community to represent them at City Hall in their quest to have a new Regional Transit shelter be erected on the busy avenue that runs through our neighborhood. A group of them wrote me a lovely letter citing my civic commitments and overall concern for the well being of the community, the care of the elderly in particular. I was very touched by this although anything having to deal with City Hall is a major challenge here.

Whatagain, Write her a love letter. A real letter, in your handwriting, in ink, on paper that is strong enough to last for years. Tell her why you love her, how you love her, what she does that makes her so lovable, what feelings you have when you are with her and without her. You will think of what you want to say, anyway. No email or typing. Put your letter in a strong envelope and post it so that arrives like a surprise in the mail. I am guessing the letter will be kept and treasured.
She is a lucky woman to have such a loving husband.

Belated congratulations to Casimira. How lovely to have your caring achievements acknowledged in that way.
And Questa, your idea is so perfect and made me realize how the simplest things can be the hardest to sit down and do, even though they can be the most meaningful.
Whatagain, have a happy anniversary celebration a little bit late.
