You could have at least thrown in a pair of knockers!
Actually, the detail of the red door is exactly what I was interested in seeing when I saw the title of this thread. I was wondering "do they make sure that doors close tighter in those cold places?" Well, apparently not. There is such an obsession about improving insulation and heat efficiency in Europe at the moment that one's eyes are immediately drawn to gaps and cracks.
However, if I am not mistaken, I seem to recall that just about all of these places have a double vestibule with an inner door, no?

Yes, that is typical here, for obvious reasons.

Do these vestibules actually have a second door or are they separated by curtains? Thick curtains are popular in Germany, you only see doors in few places.

Great to see people there are not so reserved about their use of color.Nice pics imec. Were these pics taken in primarily one section of the city or all over? I can see I'm going to have to brush up on the history of this fair city as I know very little.
The double vestibule is very common in old houses and apartment buildings in NY as well.

HW - yes, it's an actual second door. Cas - I think all but one were in the upper part of the old city (upper town). Inside the red line on this map:

Thanks for the map.Is there some reason why the streets are laid out that way,and not in a grid? Reminds me of the Vieux Carre in many ways.

Nonsense- those are wonderful doors! My favorites: The top one, then the red and blue ones.
The people who make modern doors should be ashamed of themselves. Seriously.

Hear, hear, The Doorman!
Those were so much fun to look at, Imec.
I'm thinking back, since I have >>shudder<< lived in cold climates. Isn't that vestibule you all are describing called a "mudroom"?
