The Québec Winter Carnaval (yep, same time as famous Mardi Gras/Carnaval celebrations in NOLA and Rio) has always been something I'd avoid at all costs. I had a boyfriend up in Lac St-Jean a long time ago and just changing buses or carshares was rather hellish, with a bunch of drunken idiots lurching around in the streets and making lewd passes (I was 20-smething), and more than a few throwing up. Yecch! But in recent years the city has tried to put more emphasis on family activities, and prefer promotion of a more civilised manner of tippling, along with fine local foods.
Terrasse Dufferin has absolutely magnificent views, and kerouac can look away from the rather pompous addition on Château Frontenac - though we have always viewed at as an integral part of the Québec skyline, and also an example of a specific Canadian Railway Gothic style.

I work next door to the Château Frontenac hotel in Paris, which flies the Canadian flag (I have no idea whether they should or not -- I don't know who owns it).

Built around the same time as Vanderbilt's Biltmore in Asheville,N.C. All these guys seem to try to outdo one another in opulence. No objection to it.Fabulous craftsmanship, detail and style. Sorry, but have to ask. Is there a garden there?

I'll have to defer to lagatta to answer that. I didn't spend an awful lot of time at the hotel. If there is, it wouldn't be up to much at this time of year anyway.

I'll save for another thread for the garden section but, there is much beauty to be seen in the bare trees and landscape of winter. I miss it.

We tend to see a lot of dogwoods (I think) around here with yellow or bright red bark which looks stunning against a background of white snow.

Just lovely. Historic cities are always so much more interesting then the modern ones.

My principal memory of the Château Frontenac in Québec is that the friend I was with had a vertigo attack on the promenade in front of, just by looking down at the river. We had to leave the area fast.

Is the hotel so big because it was the venue for power brokers and their smoke-filled rooms, or was Québec a resort part of the year?
What a lofty, craggy place to built a city -- I never realized. This is a wonderful, interesting report, Imec. Did the kids get off on the historical aspects of the trip?

Do the Chateau F rooms have steam heated radiators?
We visited Quebec when I was a child, but I don't remember where we stayed—but for sure it wasn't the Chateau F.

I've not stayed there DC but most of these old railroad hotels do.

Wonderful! I think a trip to Quebec and possibly Montreal is in order for Mr. T63 and Mrs. T63. What is the best time of the year?

I'll defer to lagatta on that question. If I had to answer, I'd say fall - the trees are a beautiful colour and the very large masses of tourists have gone (there are always some tourists there).
