This is fascinating - I never knew about what they are and what they are call..... and I learned a lot about architecture in school in Germany (from Romanic to Barock). Now i have to look at all my old photos from Paris, Italy and Germany. Definitely will check it out when we return this Christmas!! Thanks so much - I love it !

OK so I think I found one photo I took in Paris at the Louvre. I cannot recall what it is - I believe it's a church wall/thingy where you kneel, but I am not 100% I hope this qualifies. being new to this board I just got so excited learning all these new things !!

Kerouac, I'm wondering if, when you started this thread over three years ago, you have any idea how it would grow and continue for so long.

Well, I certainly knew that I had barely scratched the surface with my first set of photos. What you never know is if a subject will interest other people.

Thanks for remembering the Fac de médecine ones during your walk through St-Germain and part of the Quartier latin. I've always liked these, and puts parts of these, and faces in architecture, in paintings I've done. They create an odd type of human presence. I haven't been back to the Musée de Cluny in years. Indeed, restoration is a difficult task, not only in terms of skill, but in judgeing what to restore. There are Roman baths there too! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermes_de_Cluny For those who read French, the French Wiki article is more detailed.

These poor ladies have to suffer the St Petersburg winters with such minimal clothing. Their gentlemen friends across the canal also go for the bare shoulder style.

These statues from the Moscow Metro hold up the arches between platforms. They are honouring the workers and military...do they qualify as caryatids and telemones?

I always find the "curved" ones open to debate even though they are irresistible. Theoretically, caryatids and telemones are supposed to replace columns, so normally they should stand straight. But sometimes they are disobedient.

These ones were Bolsheviks every one. I can hear them arguing ...
"what's that bourgeois type saying? That we are not standing straight so can't be carry and telly somethings?"
"I say if the area that we have to support is curved, then we have to curve to fit into it".
" Yes, Comrade, to Siberia with him! we all can be carry and telly somethings"
" Yes, Comrade, just some of us more so than others"

Whatever. They look extremely uncomfortable, quickest way to a slipped disc I should imagine.

Lovely telemones ( ladies?) Kerouac. I too used to have boobs like that until gravity took over.

Perhaps I missed them, but I don't see these caryatids in your thread.
