Almost three quarters of the requests for asylum in the European Union were rejected in 2009, according to the EU office of statistics, Eurostat. Most requests came from Afghanistan (20,400), Russia (20,100), Somalia (19,100) and Kosovo.
The total number of requests for asylum was 229,500, and 73% of them were rejected (166,900). 12% received refugee status, 11% received “subsidiary protection” status, which recognizes the existence of risk in the person’s country and prevents his deportation, and 4% were accepted on humanitarian grounds.
France received 47,600 requests (rejecting more than 30,000), Germany was next with 31,800 requests (rejecting 17,000), and the UK was 3rd with 30,300 requests. France received the most requests from Kosovo, Russia and Sri Lanka. Germany received the most requests from Iraq. Somalis requested asylum mostly in Sweden and the Netherlands. The UK received most of its requests from Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Iran.
Per capita in relation to its population, Malta is the EU country with the highest number of requests for asylum. Germany is the country that accepted the most refugees, followed by France.
Naturally, there are no reliable statistics regarding the number of undocumented aliens who have not applied for formal asylum.
