I am posting a letter to Dublin and was not quite certain of the spelling of Ireland in French. So I put Ireland in French into google. The first of the usual 6 millions entries I tried was Yahoo. This was its translation for Ireland into French:
le land of potatos
I don't think the local post office will accept that.

At the office, we put Irlande on the envelopes. The official language of the UPU (universal postal union) is French, so you are actually authorised to write that on the envelope of any country in the world.

Fifteen years ago on my first visit to Egypt I sent a number of postcards to France. None arrived. I suspect the Egyptian postal workers didn't realise they had to read French.
