There are of course environmental concerns about open-pit mining, but it should be kept in mind that Malartic is a charmless company town, not much more than a mining camp, not a town or city like Québec, Trois-Rivières, Montréal and many smaller places. Such mining towns are often moved or abandoned after use. A Swedish friend told me about a similar town there being moved, earlier this year.
I thought Petroleum ruled the world now?
