Whew ~~ I'm wrung out just from watching those clips!
This movie was certainly not on my radar, but now I won't rest until I find it. It looks as though it could even wangle a place close to Bladerunner in my list of favorites.
Thanks!

The film was greatly hyped in Asia as it starred China's top pop star Faye Wong (featured in the first clip) and Japan's top pop star, plus a whole bevvy of other Pan-asian stars, and was by much-admired director Wong Kar Wai. It was also a six-year saga in the making. Everyone was expecting a glamorous sci-fi (which it partly was) but then pictures leaked to the Hong Kong press of the cast in 1960s clothes and everyone got confused (the bulk of the story actually takes place in the past).
It got mixed reviews - some critics were disappointed by it, or put of by its very slow, languorous pace. I found it hauntingly beautiful, but others just got bored. I don't think it did as well as expected at the box office, either.

Does the music featured in the trailer run throughout the film? That is sort of a clue that it's not going to be a whiz-bang action flick.
Bits of the clips you featured reminded me of certain 1970s underground comics, the ones that featured more of a progression than an actual plot, frequently with an off-center but insistent eroticism to them.
I will have to see it. Since I was never exposed to the hype, I'll approach the movie with happy ignorance.

Yes that piece of music is in it, along with lots of other beautiful, beautiful music; a mix of classical, opera, 1950s Latin music and Nat King Cole's "white Christmas". Its a lush, stunning soundtrack.

I can watch this movie over and over and find new things about it everytime. I love Peter Ustinov and Maggie Smith is always incredible! Her Cockney accent is fabulous in this movie, speaking through her nose!

I had a favorite film for many years -- Alain Tanner's Swiss film La Salamandre, from 1971. Something about it pierced my heart, and it stayed that way for about 15 years. It is no longer my favorite film... but I no longer have a favorite film, which I think is a shame. I hope to find a new favorite film again some day.
