One more week to Eurovision 2024. Croatia is leading the betting pools for the moment. (We have to keep in mind that this basically only concerns the opinion of the British Isles.)

André Rieu does not seem to age to me. He is not really a big star in France even though I think everybody knows who he is.
The girl's performance is touching, but it does not hold a candle to the passion of the original performance by Barbara Pravi.

Can someone tell me why Australia gets into the top ten...and it isn't in Europe? I don't follow the event (I nauseate easily) but I am expecting to see Antarctica's entry next year...lots of B & W penguins and burly men overdressed in Hi-Viz outfits.

Basically, any country that is a member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) can apply to enter the competition. That's why Israel is in it, and there was even Morocco one year. The ESC gained cult status in Australia over the years, so they received an invitation and have not let go since then. And since countries have to pay a fee to participate, it is always good to have countries with money.
However, Australia has rarely been in the "top ten." They were just eliminated again this year in the first semi-final.

Worth pointing out that the European Broadcasting Union is a technical co-operation organisation, to enable national public service broadcasters to exchange programmes. It pre-dates and isn't part of the EU. The post-WW2 mood of European co-operation obviously influenced its creation, but so did the difficulty of translating very different TV technical standards and, in those pre-satellite/internet days, establishing reliable cable connections. Well, you can admire me then. I will watch the 2nd demi-finale tonight to see if Mustii qualifiés for Belgium. I have my doubts.

I read on FB that this year the contestant are close to nudity for quite a few of them.

Yes, I thought that of both Ollie Alexander (UK) and Mustii (BE). But that is not necessarily how they will perform on the big stage.

The Dutch singer is expelled from the competition - apparently he behaved badly towards the staff. Omg.

I missed it (in the shower) but Jeff says he likes Germany's song best..I looked it up and listened to it and thought that it sounded a lot like last year's song (the chorus was 'I don't want to be a soldier, soldier' had the same rhythm as the new song)
Thought Sweden's was visually excellent but a bit boppy.
Ireland....er....

Switzerland's song is very odd

I liked Switzerland and also Armenia, but it must be admitted that every single performer for Armenia lives in France, and only the singer was Armenian -- all of the others on stage are French.

it must be admitted that every single performer for Armenia lives in France, and only the singer was Armenian -- all of the others on stage are French. There was never an Olympic-style nationality rule, of course. For the first ten or so years, when songs had to be in an official language of the country, there was grumbling that the French record companies had an unfair advantage since they could put their songs in for more than one country.

I'm old-fashioned (anyone else remember Gigliola Cinquetti?), so I wait till the final to know what's on offer. 26 at a time is a bit much, and a lot blur into each other. Too many slight ideas that don't improve by just being repeated for three minutes. One or two of the would-be anthemic ones allowed for a bit of call and response with the audience, which struck me as new. The ones that stood out for me as being songs as songs were France and Armenia, but clearly devoted fans have other ideas. At least it's better than lobbing bombs at each other.
