Ever since reading the reviews for Children of Men (#346 here), I've been hung up on the word "dystopian". Accordingly, I've found a couple of lists that I'm using because each film on them has a short precis. The first link uses a rating system as well. snarkerati.com/movie-news/the-top-50-dystopian-movies-of-all-time/listverse.com/2008/03/05/top-10-dystopian-films-you-havent-seen/Last night I watched Code 46, included as an extra on the first list above. I thoroughly enjoyed it, partly because of the excellence of the two main actors. But it was also compelling because of the rather dreamy pace of the movie, which pulls you into its flow. The sets and the way they're filmed are a fantastic plus. I'd love some more speculative fiction movie recommendations.

A couple of films that would fit into this category have been discussed previously.
See Ilbonito's recommendation of 2046 in the thread titled "My favourite film".
There is also a discussion started by Kerouac of Avatar, in the thread of the same name.

I enjoyed Serenity even though I was innocent of the show on which it was based. The look and scope of the movie are wonderfully realistic, bringing all the technological marvels to gritty life. What I found particularly interesting were the quick pans away from the scary/gory parts, the complete opposite of what's usually found in movies. Visually, it's a huge treat, with lots of great suspense. An oldie recommended in the 2nd link of the OP turned out to be a fun watch: A Boy and His Dog, starring a very young Don Johnson. It's *ahem* sort of a shaggy dog story and you'll probably guess the punch line before the end, but that doesn't lessen the enjoyment. It's a good popcorn movie.
