He was really badly needed on the golf course, he did make the excuse of having to be on hand to mastermind the response to Dorian.

Looked it up; that is one British sitcom/series that didn't get picked up by CBC here. If Shitforbrains were really concerned, wouldn't he have stayed in Washington? I guess he also couldn't stand to be in Poland, given that the US entered the war later on? Edited to add: Look at Pence's analysis of the "cause" of the horrific conflict; Pence + God This derives from a criminally cruel analysis common among fundies: both Christian and Jewish, that the millions of victims of the war and the Nazi genocide of Jews, Roma and other human groups was the "fault" of secularism.

I think that whilst 6 million were being murdered it would have been a good time for God to turn up.
Or if it was because man had turned away from God then he is a malicious and cruel god.

The Ganesha festival took place in Paris on September 1st, 2019. Your video at #2197 is OUTSTANDING, Kerouac! I would say it's very professional except that in so many ways it is better than many so-called professional records of events. Not only do you give us wide shots of the crowds, but we get excellent close shots of the procession with ample time to see what's happening in real time. Added to that are the great views of the bystanders, which made me feel that I was right there in the crowd. I've watched the video twice so far (put it on highest definition, everyone!) and caught different details each time.

10 years ago today, an American congressman shouted “You lie!” at the American president Barack Obama as he laid out his health care proposal to a joint session of Congress, all 535 members.
Shocking at the time. Not so much now, after 3 years of Trump verbal emissions...

I don't think the millennials will ever be able to understand our horror and disbelief on that day.

My daughter was almost 12 on the day the planes struck. Not really a millennial, but still, she was young. Since she’s lived in New York her office window has looked out over the roof of St. Paul’s Chapel towards the Oculus. Ground Zero. About 18 months ago, she moved down to an apartment in that area. The knowledge of what happened on that day is always there. It’s there on her daily walks to the gym, travel by subway, to the local grocery store, or when she’s walking her dog. She didn’t know anyone who was killed on that memorable day, but remembers it was certainly a day when time seemed to stand still and all appeared to be lost.
When I first started visiting her in Lower Manhattan, it felt almost disrespectful to be walking around, healthy and happy, when so many lives had disappeared down there. With time, I’ve learned to just go with those feelings and to remember, and then to move forward. But still, never forgetting.
It appears to me the Lower Manhattan area has grown and changed, in respectful ways. The last time I was there a new memorial had just been opened, remembering those who had worked on the cleanup and who had succumbed to illness from toxic fumes issuing from the burning rubble. It’s a shame we must build memorials, but important at the same time to remember the people who were killed in the attacks, as well as those who later died due to heroic deeds.
As with most people, I’ll never forget what I was doing and where I was at the time the first plane hit. I was in a classroom filled with seven year old children. When that is where you are, at the time of a crisis, you keep quiet, remain calm, and wait until their parents come to claim them and explain why school has ended early on that fateful day.

I fully understand how people in New York City have adjusted to this new reality, but almost none of the population of the world lives in New York City. So the older people will always remember what happened, just like the moon landing or the assassination of JFK (or Indira Gandhi or Olaf Palme or Patrice Lumumba, depending on where they live), but most millennials seem to have no sense of history in their Instagram world.

True, but that’s where education comes into play. On my walks through the ground zero area I always encounter masses of visitors from many different countries. Especially lots of families.
You were not present during the occupation of Paris, for example, but somehow you understand some of the pain and suffering that happened here during those years. You were taught the important events in history and how decisions made by others can cause massive suffering and long lasting results.

The very last shop specialised in analog cameras (film cameras) closed yesterday in Paris. The shop never sold digital cameras.
Madame N’Guyen Vu will sell her huge stock of used cameras at an auction for an estimated amount of about 20,000 euros.

Even knowing that digital cameras have taken over, it is still surprising that there was only one analog camera store left in a city the size of Paris. I wonder how many are left in other major cities. I hope the lady makes more than 20,000 euros. I've heard of younger people taking up analog cameras as a hobby. Also, some lenses meant for analog cameras will also work on the digital ones.
The display behind her seems to show disposable cameras. I wonder if those will be snapped up or ignored completely.

Some art photographers still use film/chemical processing, but for most of the world, digital cameras and especially smart phones have made film as useful as buggy whips.

I just gave my Canon AE-1 camera to my son a few months ago. I bought it in 1972 and used it for years, even though it was heavy. It is in perfect condition, according to a camera dealer to whom we sold a bunch of photographic material before we moved in April. All it needs is a battery for the light-meter.

You can still find analog cameras all over Paris but this was the very last shop that sold ONLY analog cameras.

Today is the 37th birthday of the smiley emoticon. :-)
Invented by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman in 1982 for punctuating “humorously intended computer messages”.
Thank you Professor Fahlman.

It is also the 30th anniversary of the downing of flight UTA-772, apparently at the hand of Libya. 170 people were killed. UTA flight 772
