OK, yesterday... A very important day in our history. It's been 40 years.... On March 29, 1973, the last United States troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

the world once more paid a dear price, learning process seems slow, though kimby, call me any name you like, as long as I can make out you talking to me ;D 1st of April, take your pick: -another lowlight for Germany, this date marks the beginning of the Judenboykotten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_boycott_of_Jewish_businesses-further, kick-off for the Organisation Gehlen, precursor of the (West-)German intelligence service BND – and a save shelter for literally hundreds of high ranking SS/SA/Nazi scum after WWII - well, it was the same situation almost anywhere (justice, local politics, economy...), perhaps good to keep this in mind when looking at similar situations elsewhere nowadays... -foundation of the Wrigley Company (I confess I'm a non-chewer) -Bismarck's birthday

101 years ago, RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic. That week my grandfather was crossing on a merchant ship and saw the flotsam from the "unsinkable" ship.

100 years ago, the baker Karl Albrecht started a small business in Essen that later was to become one of the world's biggest supermarket chains, aldi, which would turn his sons into the richest Germans with an estimated wealth of more than 16billion Euro each. btw, the original store still exists:

One assumes they don't still live upstairs over the store.
Amazing that the original store still exists.

Today is the anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine, April 1986.
At the time we were living in eastern France, in the direct path of the radioactive clouds and waste travelling west. Of course, the French government told everyone that everything was fine because the clouds stopped at the border. Meanwhile, not far away, in Switzerland and Germany, people were washing cars, told not to eat fruit and vegetables.

well i don't remember that time, but from what my parent said, it took quite a while at least in the gdr, before there were warnings. first it was also pretended all is fine.
one of my brothers was born in 1986. one of his elementary school friends, born in the same year, got leukemia when he was 8. i was told that there were much higher numbers of children with leukemia among those born in that year than in other years...

today 150years ago Max Skladanowsky was born, who along with his brother invented the Bioscop, an early movie projector. he was very slightly ahead of the Lumière brothers' Cinémtaographe, alas inferior in quality and quickly became obsolete again. afterwards, he put very much effort in claiming the whole of cinematography his idea . nowadays, some cinemas in the Netherlands and Nordic countries are still called 'bioskop'... as regards the LA riots, I think it's often forgotten how much influence they've had on the American society, e.g. the rise of gated communities etc. as regards Chernobyl, I'm still slightly moped that my school didn't reimburse us for the milk we paid for yet didn't get and bixa: though the aldi brothers were known to live a secluded life, I don't think they would have been modest enough for that

On his day in 1975 South Vietnam surrendered.
Despite previous presidential promises to provide aid in such a scenario, the United States did nothing. By this time, Nixon had resigned from office and his successor, Gerald Ford, was unable to convince a hostile Congress to make good on Nixon's earlier promises to rescue Saigon from communist takeover.

Not an event of international significance, but 90 years ago today my Mom was born!
(We 3 daughters plus spouses/significant others are all gathering to celebrate for a weekend at the family cabin, culminating in scattering some of Dad's ashes on Memorial Day.)
