Things like internet home pages (Yahoo or whatever) often display all sorts of headlines that are supposed to be news.
I fear that I may not be attuned to the preoccupations of my fellow man, because I just do not feel like clicking on certain items to find out more.
Charlie Sheen's car stolen again.
Lindsay Lohan throws gum at crowd.
Paula says Simon will make great husband.

I look at Google news. Like Kerouac I pass over a lot of the stories as the headlines mean nothing to me. It is the celebrity-obsessed age.

When I open my Yahoo Mail page, there is a box in the center of the page that looks like this: * Top Stories * Buzz * Entertainment * Sports * World
* BP executives arrive at WH to meet with Obama (AP) AP - Top BP oil company officials, including chief executive Tony Hayward, have arrived at the White House for a meeting Wednesday with President Barack Obama. * BP starts burning oil from leaking ruptured well (AP) * 3 killed, homes damaged in Indonesia quakes (AP) * Home construction sinks, building permits down (AP) * Pakistan: US bin Laden hunter on mission from God (AP) * AP-GfK Poll bolsters congressional Democrats (AP)

I can click on any headline to go to the full story, or click on the starred designations at the top to see a different group of headlines. Even though these are all AP stories, I feel the headlines cue me to stories that can be looked up on other news servers. Also, I get the NYTimes in the headline format edition in my inbox every day.
