While languishing ill in bed I am doing a bit of research on next winter's holiday. I want to fly to Penang before heading into southern Thailand. But I am having trouble with budget accommodationin Georgetown which seems to have the drawbacks of bedgugs, paper-thin walls, no windows..
Anybody have suggestions?

The Mingood is less than $30 (US) a night. Modern, not very interesting but convenient.

Chulia Street is Penang's (much tamer) very own Khao San Rd, Baz. I don't think it would be really necessary to book in advance but probably that depends a bit on the season.
There used to be a couple of cheapish places out on the beach at Batu Ferringhi but I think they've disappeared.
Have high tea at the E& O!

HW, we'll be going towards the end of January which is pretty much high season. It is always reassuring to have the first couple opf days' accommodation booked after a long haul flight. 75 Travel Loodge has been recommended on TT by a couple of people. It certainly isn't expensive. To put it rather negatively, I haven't heard anything bad about it.

Check the Tripadvisor ratings, or was that Travelfish? That could give you an idea.

Tripadvisor doesn't have any reports. Travelfish says it is a bit tatty but friendly and quiet. I read another report somewhere that complained of noise - the poor dear didn't sleep a wink because of the noise and having seen a mouse - eek. But a couple of posters on TT say it is fine. One has been going for years and says to look for the marks on the wall by the entrance that show how his son has grown. I like that.
