We've just had an earthquake, 5.5 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was north of Ottawa. Now the Toronto media is having a field day, interviewing all and sundry. Makes a change from the G20 & G8 claptrap.
We noticed it because our dishes started rattling. Our portable A/C has been acting up and DH thought it was popping its clogs. He was worried about that.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. Is it a seismic zone at all?

There is a fault line that runs along the St. Lawrence river valley. We get earthquakes periodically but I don't think they have ever been very destructive.

Yes, it is a minor fault zone. This is bizarre as I live much closer to Ottawa than GTA (Greater Toronto Area) people do, I'm a light, fitful sleeper and heard and felt absolutely nothing. Several people in Hamilton, Toronto and nearby places felt it.
As for the summit meeting in Toronto, a pundit pointed out that it could have been held on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds (used only for that fair and other events) and not disrupted the lives of people working and living in the largest city in Canada. This is right by the harbour, with lots of photo ops, not in some dreary exurb - it would have been a brilliant idea and I wonder why it wasn't contemplaced.

Oh -- I somehow did not see this! Have you all had tremors before, Joanne? What about you, LaGatta? I live in an earthquake zone but spend no time worrying about it. Still, there is something about even a minor tremor that is disconcerting.

I didn't feel it at all - probably because there is a lot of construction going on here and I just thought it was such a boom.
I found them very upsetting when living in Perugia. Some of you might recall that there was an earthquake in that area not many years ago that severely damaged the beautiful Giotto frescoes at the church of St-Francis in Assisi (which is now pretty much a suburb of Perugia, although the two nearby city-states were warring in Francis' day).

Did they determine if there was any damage anywhere? Normally an earthquake that strong is good for a few cracked walls and some broken dishes.

Earthquakes are strange. I don't remember feeling the June 1999 quake that did so much damage to the city of Puebla. I distinctly remember the one at the end of September that same year, though. Although it was stronger, it didn't do as much overall damage as the June quake. Lemme tell you, that was a looooooooong 42 seconds!
