I find it interesting, that when our Scottish Terrier wants to have a poo/dump/shit, she squats and does her thing.
On the other hand, our Britanny Spaniel, finds his spot, does three little, on the spot, circles and then does his thing.
No real point, unless someone has some kind of insight.

Charlie always goes for a little run before she gets in position. Sometimes she decides that the place is not quite right. So she gets in position, keeps walking or running, gets in position again and then does her business. Sometimes she does that 3 or 4 times before the place is right. Very odd to watch ! Border Collies are weird...

I would imagine that dogs that circle around are doing the same things as dogs that circle before lying down -- checking out the area to make sure there is nothing there that could attack them.

I had a terrier/something mix -- 20 lbs of overdrive terrier masculinity -- who always had to leave his poop on a pedestal. He'd sometimes have trouble getting into position, as the higher the setting for his jewel of a dump, the better.

Bix, that is very funny.
Zonker had a dog, that used to always do his thing against the wall but would face inwards, so apparently there was a row of perfectly lined up doggie doo against the wall.
Our Bonnie, mostly tried to make sure that no one is watching her and will go behind a bush if she thinks we are watching.

I have seen dogs that seem to need to poop in altitude or against walls. I suppose it is to decrease vulnerability...?
