If you google 'overtraining before bone maturation' there are 3 good articles near the top.
'Trainability of young athletes.....'
'The dangers of overtraining youth'
'controversies.....'
This is 5th attempt to pass on this info.

I'm always talking about George but now all the stats for our club last season are on line, his younger brother, Joe who was 13 for most of last season had the best bowling figures of anybody in the club - 5-13 including a hat trick and was 5th best for catches with 10.

He'll be getting that this afternoon as his grandmother is treating him to Mcdonalds when she picks him up from school.

Today - a milkshake, Tomorrow - a Ferrari !
Do you think his performance was so good because much of the pressure from team and family was on George's shoulders?
Where does Joe bat/bowl? Could be a formidable pair in 6-8 years.

Questa - At Mc D's you get a Ferrari with your McFlurry or whatever.....my grandsons love the Kiddies Meal that comes with a toy. Yes, for about 5 minutes and by the time we get home they're bored with it. Too bad for them because I collect all these discarded items and give them to some little street kid.

Joe is totally different to George - enjoys his cricket but not driven like George and happy in the third team with his mates. Doesn't want to trial for County for example.
Off break bowler with a good action but bats low down although he has a good eye and can hit it miles. Needs work on his technique. Hands like buckets and catches are the same whether they are 1st XI or 3rd XI.

This makes me wonder if my lot will be any good at cricket. The older one starts play in earnest next year. Now they just have group bowling and batting but are not in a team. I don't hold out much hope as his ball skills are slow.

Way to go, Joe! I hope his older brother gives him some recognition. A word of praise from him would probably mean a lot to Joe.
Now we have two cricketers to keep an eye on. I will still need translations of any cricketing terms, though.
Questa, Tod, so funny!

Mick, As long as Joe keeps showing up for the odd game or so, in a couple of years he will discover that girls like being seen with cricketers. Then he may pay more attention to his cricketing skills....or not as the case may be!

Cricket festival - All local and some not so local Junior schools play against each other for 1 hour. Scoring runs and getting a wicket - just the same as 'big' cricket I went to watch the eldest grandson with my son, who took some time away from the office to see his boy play. I was lucky enough to find a shady bench, put my cushion down and settled back to enjoy the little grasshopers darting about. Of course, being the good grandmother I am, I had a coolbox filled with icy cold fruit juices and some snacks in a packet. Grandma also brought along some wet face towels in the ice. This was appreciated when he came off the field and could wrap one around the nape of his neck. Did I tell you it was over 42C? This is one half of the top field. There was another field further along. imageshack.com/a/img922/1638/VOjVQ2.jpgimageshack.com/a/img924/2527/84w1sm.jpgThe other half of my view. imageshack.com/a/img922/8630/DSIMtc.jpg

The world may be going to hell in a hand basket, but as long as those scenes are going on somewhere on the planet, there is hope for us yet.
Clever grand mothers! my cool box is like yours but I use old single-bed sheets...dip them in the cool water then swathe the head and body. More and more matches are being moved to evenings now as 42C is 'cruel and unusual punishment'.
I simply love your photos...THWACK...willow on leather...'Howzat?'

Definitely Questa! At all matches our boys wear very wide-brimmed white cotton hats for protection against the blazing sun but I notice other schools only had a peak cap on. Not good enough. My grandson is required to posses two hats but on an occasion I have seen someone else name inside so before the match went and bought him another spare. I had to laugh when I questioned him about the hat he was wearing "Is that your hat Tan?" - Answer: "Yes! And I can prove it", says he whipping it off and proudly showing me the name tag inside.

Lovely pictures tod but 42c? They certainly need the wide hat in those conditions. I know George likes it hot when he plays but that's a bit much.

Darn! Couldn't see anything on those two links Mick. Actually down here in 'sleepy hollow' some temps read 47C. As Hilton is always a few degrees cooler I suspect the field temp. was around 39C. Still bloody hot!

That's a shame. The first one shows an Under 19 Sri Lankan bowler who bowls left and right arm in the same over and the second shows great fielding by the Zimbabwe under 19 captain on the boundary.

My copies came up with "UK only" and still photos. The ambidextrous guy looks ferocious with either arm, Also the catch on the boundary looks super-human. It would seem the U19s are more interesting than the national teams ATM.
That "Mankad" dismissal was very unsporting and as the bat was on the crease, should not have been given anyway. Reminds me....The notorious "underarm bowling" incident took place 35 years ago last weekend. I remember it like it was last week...Wiki gives the story.

Yes, the Mankad was quite unacceptable.
Although he catches it he falls over the boundary but throws it back to another fielder before he hits the ground.

Sorry Mick baby, we are enjoying a lovely win! After 2 down the South Africans came back to win the series by 5 wickets. What a game for gentlemen - AB de Villiers being allowed to walk off the field to huge applause as the man who struck the last ball for 4, hung back to allow his captain a well earned bit of glory.

Well, our season is finally approaching and George is desperate to play outside again after numerous winter training indoors (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning every week). When he returns to school after the Easter break the season starts for him.
First game is April 14 and it won't be warm. He asked if it was possible to field in gloves but the rules don't allow with the wicket keeper being the only person allowed to play in gloves. If a fielder fields in gloves it's a 5 run penalty.

IIRC...The famous guitarist, Julian Bream played County cricket and was allowed to wear gloves to protect his hands.

I didn't know that.
I did hear that he was caught behind fishing outside the off stump though.
Incidentally when I started there was a guy called Joe Misso, a Sri Lankan, who played for Brentham and reputed to have scored 310 centuries (per Cricinfo). He always fielded wearing one white glove. Long before Michael Jackson was famous.

My grandson Tanen played in the last Festival of Cricket today - in 36C. Luckily the humidity was low so it was very pleasant sitting in the shade with a cup of tea and a slice of Madeira cake at half-time.(The onlookers that is, not the boys). I noticed he had fun squirting his mates in the face (they asked for it!) with his bottle of ice water I gave him to take onto the field. Little monkeys!
