Mick, tell him in spirit I'll be in the cheap seats blowing on some awful horn to celebrate his wickets. Do the Barmies accept short-term members?

Oh yes! But you have to sing the anti Aussie songs - particularly the Ricky Ponting ones.
Tanzania are playing a Div 5 tournament in Jersey later in the month.

Mick, Maxie was called Tanglefoot which shortened to Tangles.
He did a TV ad where he applied insect repellent and a 10 year old kid pops up and says "I use it too Mister Walker" which caused him to be called "Mr Walker" for a while.

Tanglefoot is perfect! I can see that bowling action now!
We were completely blown away by Chris Gayle in the T20 but we bowled poorly to him and don't have any decent spinners. Our batting is OK but not our bowling. I don't see us getting too far.

Chris Gayle spent a couple of seasons in South Australia, playing for the state side, the Redbacks. When he is seeing the ball it is marvellous, as we saw recently, but he was a bit inconsistent and often could not get a start. He was good with the team though, they had been drifting and he pulled them into shape. Then he went and played for another state and came into form!

Well, somehow we have got to the semis. I can't see us beating NZ though but you never know. If India can overcome Chris Gayle I reckon they will go through.

I'm wondering how Windies took both men's and women's. I can almost hear the steel drums in Kingston Town from here.

Much-loved former Australian Test cricketer Max Walker has died, aged 68, after well-regarded careers as an international bowler and colourful commentator.Walker became a high-profile author, media personality and public speaker after an eight-year run with the Australian cricket team.
He made his Test debut in 1973 and took 138 wickets in 34 Tests, with his bizarre medium-pace bowling action earning him the nickname 'Tangles'
Vale, Maxie, man of the people, lover of life.

Two and a half hours and counting down......the season starts with Oz playing Sefrica in Perth. Neither team seems to me to have the upper hand. I haven't followed much in the last few weeks but they seem like teams just coming together... some brilliance and some patience, but mostly the itch to get started on the season. Happy viewing

Oh Rats! I wrote a pithy little commentary late last night and as it is not here, I must have forgotten to hit 'post'.
With the early collapse of SA who then got their act together, and the good start by Oz who then had their own collapse, I stand by my observation that both teams appear unready for Test play. Neither is working well as a team, more like a few trying to support the rest. Maybe someone should give both teams a talk about commitment.

Questa, what do you think of the 'racist' comment from Ian Chappell about Kagiso Rabada? Had he known ANYTHING about Rabada's background I'm sure he would have said something different. I mean, how can you think Johannesburg is a village. After all, his Brain surgeon father and Lawyer mother would not be able to work in a village for a start. Not forgetting young men from a village do not attend the prestigious St.Stithian's School for Boys.
Having said all that - if Rabada were in England and the same comment made, no one would bat an eyelid as there are countless villages all over the show. (Not the same as our African villages though).

Tod2...sorry, I missed that. I have been very busy lately and pretty well missed the match and Chappell's comment. Ian is known for his big mouth and arrogant style. His reputation for sledging and inappropriate comments goes back to the Packer days. Being so good a player and captain he seems to think that his utterances are on par with his playing skills. He thinks rules don't apply to him ...even showed up at a special luncheon at Lord's wearing sports clothes and shoes with no socks. Maybe he is getting old and querulous.
Congrats on the win BTW

Oz team are playing like little girls. Morale is flatter than a lizard on a highway. heard tonight that all team except 2 (unnamed) will be replaced for the next Test here in Adelaide next week. So much for building a team spirit Anyway Tod, congrats on your team having the great bowlers to win the 2 tests.

Cricket is a game of psychology as much as bat and ball. You get picked for the national team over thousands of wannabees. so you have to be good at the physicalities of the game. However this is a team in name only. As we lost the last 5 test matches, the selectors re-caste the play with different players each time. South Africa has a good tight team that have played well and support each others' position in the team. They also have some excellent bowlers. As the Oz faced up to the bowlers they looked like rabbits in the headlights of an oncoming car...they just mentally froze. After a few indecisive strokes and an early run out, the Oz team became completely demoralised and collapse was inevitable.
Now Rod Marsh, one of the selectors and a long time senior player has resigned. Rod understands the importance of a team spirit having been part of the Lillee, Marsh and G Chappell triumvirate in Oz glory days. I hope that now he can talk to this new-born team and get them playing as a unit.

You are absolutely right Questa. My most successful period was with a team who became the best in London and surrounding Counties and were unbeaten for 2 years in the late '60's early '70's. We only finally lost against a side playing a Test standard leg spinner - Robin Hobbs. But as a team we could not have been tighter and with the perfect mix - 5 very talented youngsters and the remainder highly experienced old hands. And we were a team at all times on and off the pitch.
