We've had a street tea party this afternoon. It was on the initiative of a couple of people who thought it would be a nice way to welcome a few new tenants in our street.
The sun came out after a rainy morning and it was very jolly, and nice to meet the newbies.

Sounds good. Here, they have invented a "neighbor's day" which has not really caught on yet, but I think there's a chance it will succeed some day. (It has existed for about 5 years, in May, I think.) One thing that helps it along in the big cities is that some of the supermarket chains set up a free buffet for lunch out on the sidewalk, so obviously people are going to show up, if only for the free wine! If they served tea, nobody would come.

What a charming, friendly idea, Betsie! Not only would it make the new people feel welcome, but it's a great way to get everyone to mingle. What was served?

Just tea and coffee, cake and biscuits, but it was nice.

If it would have been possible, I would have attended! We used to have the Welcome Wagon ladies, however, that seems to be a thing of the past..
A new neighbour would find a plastic bag hanging on their door knob a few weeks after moving in. It would have been left by a member of the Welcome Wagon ladies. The bag would include coupons from hairdressers and such, community newsletter, important phone number lists and an invitation to their next meeting or social.

wow!! this actually sounds quite nice. Although my neighbours on the one side should lug down something a lot stronger than tea....real unpleasant them.

Yes, now that Betsie has told about it, the big question is why isn't this done everywhere, all the time? Probably even some more long-term residents of a neighborhood would appreciate the opportunity to know all their neighbors a little more.
