"“Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey, hey, goodbye.”" Gary DeCarlo, author of these immortal lyrics, has died at age 75 of lung cancer.

Gawd -- I'm an idiot! I didn't even see your link -- particularly pitiful since links show up red on the skin I'm using.

I feel that rock and pop music gave us many more 'stars' than our parents had, just because it became possible/easier to listen to a lot more and different people. Therefore we are condemned to see many more people who marked us die.

Just heard this news . I had the great privledge of seeing him perform right after Hurricane Katrina at the UNO Arena. He played what seemed like forever... I had such a good time that night!!! Such a cool guy. (native of Gainsville Fla.)

The sound of Tom Petty’s music always takes me back to my college days. I spent many nights at Dubs, dancing to the music of Mudcrutch. Later, I taught at a school built on Mudcrutch farm property. Tom still has a lot of family and friends here in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Gainesville: Where Tom Petty’s dreams began

So now (8:55 pm CDT & as of about four hours) ago -- it turns out that Tom Petty is NOT dead.
The damned news outlets are so eager to be first with a story, they no longer bother checking facts.

The article linked in my post says that CBS retracted their statement about his death, but because the source wasn't authorized to make the announcement. He was found in his home unconscious and not breathing following massive cardiac arrest and was put on life support.
If he's not dead, he's not living either. Perhaps they are waiting to harvest his (other) organs before pulling the plug. Sad.

I find myself curiously unmoved when somebody dies whom I thought had been dead for years.

Kerouac...if it is someone who has been part of my life with their music or writing, I still feel the thud in my heart and the sudden grief that part of me has gone. Many of the 'folk' singers of the 60s in Sydney I knew personally and as they have dispersed, we have mostly lost touch. Now I hear of those who have died and regret not knowing at the time. Then I am amazed over the ones who are still alive...Rolling Stones' Syndrome I suppose.

Yes, but not having heard about somebody's death and learning about it late and thinking that somebody has been dead for years when they weren't doesn't provoke the same emotion.

I can't believe Fats Domino was only 89. I must have been around 13 when he was one of a number of singers that dominated our 'rock 'n roll' parties in 1959. He seemed so much older to me then - could have been because he was a 'big' man.
