Hi Casimira! I was wondering where you were, since I figured you would have been the first person to report on his death.
I think it made national and international news, so you all must have been truly cocooned up there! Anyway, yes a shock. I always sort of kept up with any Fats news and of course realized he was seeming more and more frail, but his death is the real end of an era.

Same with me -- I was very surprised that Casimira would not immediately comment about this event.
It's as though I ignored Charles Aznavour's death. No, he is not dead -- but he was born the same year as my mother, so he is a milestone for me. At age 93, he is starting a new concert tour. Frankly, his wonderful voice quivers now, but I am in total admiration that he is still standing.

Well, we weren't totally off the grid but somehow seemed to have missed this news. I was without wifi however, T. has a sophisticated phone (which he barely knows how to use ) and, on that particular day we were in NYC celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary where I managed to leave my purse on a crosstown bus early that a.m. so, most of the day was consumed with dealing with that fiasco... Back at my mother's house which we were packing up as it is under contract I was overwhelmed with all manner of stress coupled with saying goodbye to my birthplace... I know this may be TMI but, last night reading about Fats just after we arrived home to NOLA was devastating on top of all the other "stuff" that transpired while gone. And yes, truly the end of an era that we lived through a lot of. The radio stations are rampant with tributes as are all the music clubs in town.

Oh dear, casimira, I doubt any finder would return money in your purse unless you had a guardian angel, but I hope you managed to retrieve important cards and documents...
There was quite a lot on the media here. There is a sort of kinship here with Louisiana that is probably more imagined than anything else, except when I walk past wrought-iron balconies shining with ice in the wintertime... More significantly, there seems to be a lot of affinities between that culture and those of the Caribbean, now very present up here.

Back at my mother's house which we were packing up as it is under contract I was overwhelmed with all manner of stress coupled with saying goodbye to my birthplace... Oh, Casi! Such a lot of stress for a short period of time. Giving up the family home is hard enough. Losing one's purse is awful. I have twice left my purse in restaurants in the past year or so, but was lucky that a good Samaritan turned it in (intact) the first time, and the waitress chased me down in the parking lot the second time. And I know how a third blow can sometimes generate an oversized reaction because of the stress built up from the earlier events. Not that Fats Domino doesn't deserve a noisy An outburst of tears!

I am a big fan of Ac/dc. Didn't know he was demented though. Now I know why I like them ...

He didn’t deserve to live! But he did. And I was surprised to learn that he recorded music. He made music and he’s dead. So, though despicable, he qualifies, IMO. Anyone else?

Bury him deep in an unmarked grave to prevent cults visiting. Maybe a stake through his heart, but no ceremony. No flowers or music, perhaps garlic and the echoes of his victims screams. No RIP but eternal hell fire.

It makes no difference to me. It was my sentiment of the moment. Not even worthy of a discussion as far as I'm concerned. I do understand your reasoning.
Ditto what Questa said.

David Cassidy dead-- at age 67. Dementia and other issues at such a young age. Very sad.
His father Jack Cassidy, a super talented and prolific actor, died at age 49 in 1976 by falling asleep extremely drunk with a cigarette in his lap and his entire apartment burned to shreds, including him.
Bad luck family. 😕😔
RIP.

A bit of trivia regarding David Cassidy's band The Partridge Family which went on to be a successful TV show. The Partridge Family was based on a New Orleans musical family, The Cowsills.
Ironically, this family had their own share of bad luck and tragedy. Barry Cowsill took his life right after Hurricane Katrina when he decided to drown himself in the Mississippi River.
Susan Cowsill continues to perform in a few of the local music clubs. She is a quite lovely person.

Mr. Kimby asked if I was one of the many teens swooning over David Cassidy, and I replied that I was more of a Monkees/Davy Jones fan. I think he has died young, too. (Goes off to Google it.) Being a teenager heartthrob must be bad for longevity: Davy Jones, 1945-2012, dead of a heart attack at 67. www.biography.com/people/davy-jones-377858

Is this the thread to announce death ? Johnny Halliday will probably leave in a few weeks.
The guy sold 110 millions records I just read. He is nicknamed the worlds most anonymous rockstar since he is virtually unknown outside frenchspeaking countries.
Strange btw that we all know English speaking or native speaking groups and singers but about nobody singing in another language.
Flemish singers are superbly ignored in Wallonia fir example.

Amusing comment on the France24 webpage this morning: "Very surreal morning in the newsroom. French singing Johnny Halliday songs, Anglophones trying to figure out who he was".
I must admit I was not a fan and had indeed never heard of him before moving to France.

I liked the guy. I like a lot of his songs but not the first years when it was a habit in france to translate US songs into french. My favourite was Sang pour sang that he sang with his son David who composed.
A monument in the French musical culture.

I wouldn't call myself a fan, but he was very good at what he did, and had a beautiful voice (and sang in tune).

"The Man on the Train" is good. Mick, I assume you know David is a fairly well-regarded GT racer. In case he hasn't mentioned it
