This is happening more and more. Considering the "contract" that people sign when they join the army, I really am not certain if this guy has a moral or legal leg to stand on.

Personally, I think if everyone refused to serve in any military at all, there might be more chance of establishing peace throughout the world.
Be that as it may, I don't think this guy has a legal leg to stand on.
My dad was in the air force during WWII. He got out, but was a Reserve officer. He was recalled during Korea, & since he had two kids by then and was over thirty, decided to stay in. Thus he was a reserve on active duty until he retired in 1970. He was sent to Vietnam and of course had to return there after his scheduled r&r. He did not think that war made any sense, but said that as he'd taken money from the government all those years, that he was bound to go.

During the Viet Nam war Canada took in many army deserters. According to a recent high court decision; today. Canada will no longer accept deserters. The decision is based on the soldiers volunteering for duty rather than the earlier method of inscription. Several thousand US army deserters are awaiting deportation from Canada. There have been many localized marches and sit ins for a harder stand. Canada is such a pussy country. Makes me embarrassed

He was a volunteer, he signed a contract, he's a deserter if he doesn't return.

Of course he is a deserter. But if his country totally misled him as to the objectives that were being defended and the treatment of prisoners and other similar matters, it is quite comprehensible.
I think the days when soldiers were mindless robots who obeyed all orders without question have ended in the Western world, to the dismay of the commanders.

Re: the video in Reply #5 above -- it was cleverly done and I know it's supposed to be fun ......... but all I could think of is what is going to happen to those laughing young men, and what is being done to that poor country.

But those were all things he knew about before he signed, right? I think a person of reasonable intelligence who joins the US, British or Australian armed forces should know he will be sent to war. And in the case of America not always just wars. I get a feeling a lot of these guys sign up for the adventure and then discover they got more than they bargained for. I've no sympathy with them whatsoever.

Perhaps he's realized the error of his ways. I can't blame him for wanting 'out'. Maybe he's seen sights that have changed his mind. I say 'well done, soldier'.

Desertion is something I don't accept (especially if it's done by volunteers). It is a betrayal that shouldn't be allowed to go unpunished. He could have asked for a discharge, it would probably have been a dishonourable one, why couldn't he live with that?
