The toxic programme of mid-May is rapidly approaching, and France continues to beat its brains out to find something different to get a chance at the prize for the first time since 1977. Clearly nothing sung in French has a chance, so the song is in Corsican. And a snappy pop tune? Forget it!

At first it looked like an ad for a hotel chain. Then it's not clear what is supposed to be going on. What is clear is that it's not going to win.

Yes, I have no idea why they went to the bling factor. All he needs are some heavy gold chains around his neck and a diamond stud in his ear.

OMG....I hatehatehate Eurovision.... I cannot understand where they dredge up the entries from! I can assure you that (in the case of England anyway) they are NOT representative of the taste in music of the indigenous population. Quite why they have entered a has-been boy band like Blue with a fifth-rate song I don't know...nothing to lose.... There's this idea that England will never win because of 'political voting' by the judges...no....it's because our entries are always dreadful....I'm so ashamed....

France are the favourites to win this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Germany according to British bookmakers William Hill. The French song Sognu by Amaury Vassili has been given odds of 5/1 by William Hill and is closely followed in the betting order by the United Kingdom at 6/1, Estonia at 13/2 and Norway, Azerbaijan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Sweden and Germany all at 10/1. Rank outsiders to win the this year's contest at odds of 250/1 both Malta and Portugal.
Time to take a look at Estonia.

Just had a look at the later videos here! Why do people sit in a theatre and listed to a guy dressed as a chicken?
And what happens to Eurovision winners? Do they go on to bigger and better things, or is that their one fleeting glimpse of "fame"? Is it because I'm out of touch that I never hear about them?

So did Céline Dion. (I think she represented Switzerland.)

I think some people still have some hope of being snapped by a music company but many only get their 15 minutes' of fame from the event. Some countries do send known "stars" to the event from time to time. DJ Bobo represented Switzerland a few years ago when he most definitely didn't need the exposure for example. (I have no particular fondness for DJ Bobo's music)

The French have also thrust well known local stars into the Eurovision pit -- Patricia Kaas, Gérard Lenorman, Patrick Fiori...

Here are the odds from the Victor Chandler betting site:
France 11/4
United Kingdom 6/1
Estonia 7/1
Azerbaijan 10/1
Norway 10/1
Sweden 10/1
Hungary 10/1
Bosnia and Herzegovina 12/1
Germany 16/1
And Paddy Power:
France 11/4
United Kingdom 6/1
Estonia 7/1
Hungary 8/1
Sweden 9/1
Azerbaijan 10/1
Bosnia & Herzegovina 12/1
Israel has certainly lost all imagination, because it is presenting its transsexual star Dana International again, even though she already won in 1998.

OMG, Italy has returned to Eurovision after a 14 year boycott. I find it somewhat unfair that they are automatically qualified as one of the founding members* -- they should have been forced to fight it out in the semifinals. Their song is shit anyway.
* France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany (all qualified automatically no matter how awful their songs are)

And so, this year's winners are.... Azerbaijan.
Frankly, I think it is wonderful when a small country wins the contest, but then I worry about next year. Germany spent 8 million euros to transform a football stadium into a 35,000 seat enclosed concert hall. Baku is probably going to break the national budget to put on the show next year. Even Israel, when it won two years in a row, threw in the towel and asked another country to put on the show instead the following year.

Yes, the betting favourite, France, came in 15th. 12 points from Greece and Belgium, I think.

It is often so unfair, as well as incomprehensible. The French singer was furious (which I suppose is normal after being told that he was going to win), but I was shocked to see that he criticized the French jury for voting for Sweden. Sweden was considered to be one of his major risks, and he seemed to think that for that reason, the professional jury was supposed to vote against that song, whether or not they thought it was good or not.
