first radish from my balcony for this year...
radishes don't tend to grow that well on my balcony, but at least some of them turn out, and this one was very tasty...

Yaaay ~~ a triumph.
Rikita, I have very limited dirt space in my patio, as it's mostly an expanse of concrete. Any tips on what food crops do well in pots? I think those rectangular planters would look great and would increase my growing space, but don't want to put stuff in them that would suffer.

How deep will the soil be in your planters Bixa?

well i suppose your climate is very different from the one here, i bet things grow better there though... but tomatoes are usually doing okay on my balcony, and herbs of course... chili peppers are okay too but sweet peppers never have a lot of fruit. i am experimenting with beans and with mangold again this year, hopefully more successfully than last year...

ow deep will the soil be in your planters Bixa? Depends on what you all advise me to do. I would love to grow some eggplant. Those are nice big pots for your potatoes, Cheery. Does the grid at the top support the plant as it grows tall? Also, do you add dirt as the plant grows? i have to leave some space for smoking on there... Surely you're not the smoker, Rikita? "They" say tobacco smoke is bad for tomato plants, although I'm not sure that's true. Even so, you could use that as an excuse to discourage smoking around your plant babies.

I tried one year to plant lettuce and carrots. The lettuce came but the carrots did not seem to like the pots. I envy those that can plant vegetables in pots, I think it is a talent. Mich

That reminded me of an old one.................................
The groom came down to breakfast from the bridal suite on his own, the waiter asked him where his wife was...... "I left her in bed smoking" he replied............ The waiter winked and said "thats the way to do em".............

potatoes can be grown in bags as well, to use less space.

My dill is yellowing. Other than that, it looks healthy. My pot of "mixed wildflowers" is still growing well and I can't wait to see what happens. I have no idea what is what.

I have often wanted to buy a packet of the mixed wildflowers and spread them out in the back of my house where it is not a very manicured piece of the property. I think I shall.
I will be waiting to hear what becomes of your seedlings Kerouac. Why do you think your dill is yellowing? Mich

It might have just been too hot and sunny lately. Dill might prefer a bit more shade, although I have not looked it up.

Mich, I think if you prepare the soil & fling those wildflower seeds, you will get some stuff that will return for generations. That would be so pretty.
Rikita, was it the leaves of the mangold that went brown, or is the root itself ruined?

Sounds terminal doesn't it.... did the compost dry out? This afternoon I've sown some cut-and-come-again salad leaves seed in 2 shallow pots.

Dill doesn't grow here at all, so perhaps the heat in Paris lately has killed Kerouac's dill.
I finally cracked and bought a couple of tomato plants again. I get almost no tomatoes and swear each year I won't plant any more. This year looks particularly bad because of the lack of rain. The guy who sold me the plants couldn't believe it when I said they didn't grow -- well, they do grow, they just don't produce many tomatoes. Then again, he told me he manages to grow rhubarb too, which I have tried several times with no luck.

Then again, he told me he manages to grow rhubarb too, which I have tried several times with no luck. In Lorraine, nobody has to cultivate rhubarb. It grows as a weed, so when you want some, you just go out into the fields with a knife.
