This confirms to me the rounded edges of Swiss German rather than the sharp ones of German German. Of course the musical style helps.

The Mani Matter guy sounds sort of Dutch to me.

What about Stéphane Eicher? Does he sing in German or Schweizerdeutsch?

ah, Stefan Eicher speaks Baerntuetsch.Like Mani Matter... whose song Hemmige he has also covered. He usually sings in either English or French or dialect I should think.

I actually don't know where ursus and nadeschkin are from, I can't listen to the video here at work. Will try at home and tell you if I can figure out their accent.
Ooooh Stephan Eicher is HOT !

Although I've visited Swiss German cantons for many years, I don't understand anything about the different dialects other than people from Shaffhausen refer to the place in their dialect as 'Schaffhouse)...

I love that song 'Hemmige'! The Swiss dialects often differ even from village to village. Not profoundly of course but there will be little variations in words or small differences in pronounciation. Ursus and Nadeschkin don't sound like they are from Basel. Basel is more close to 'alemannisch' and has more of a singing tune in it. The recording here is old, but maybe you can hear the difference in the melody:
Here's a piece of Alsacian and if someone has a good ear for the melody of languages you may be able to detect a similar 'sing-song'.

My Swiss German friends have always felt perfectly at home in Alsace.
