I have a bottle of cooking sake, that is still half full but half a year past the expiry date. now, as that stuff is expensive, i don't really want to throw it out unless i have to - and i always thought alcohol doesn't really go off (though no idea how much alcohol is in cooking sake) - i smelled it, and it seems alright, but i have no idea what it is supposed to smell like (it smells slightly sour now, but very slightly, like no disagreeable smell or anything).
what risks would there be if it is off? would it be stupid to use it, or could it still be okay?

I'm sure it is still fine, and since you're using it for cooking, even more so.

What Kerouac said. Also, I don't know about sake, but I always heard that the difference between regular sherry and cooking sherry was that the cooking sherry had salt added to it.
I suppose that, in the US at least, it was something done to allow sherry to be sold in the supermarkets, where all states don't allow alcoholic beverages to be sold.
It could also be to stabilize the product.
Have you tasted the sake?

Riki, is the bottle opaque or can you actually see the sake? if it it smells and looks allright, taking into account that is is alcohol, it should be fine.

it is a clear bottle and the sake looks as clear as aways... i had some soba with tsuyu today, which i prepared with the sake, and it tasted normal too.

I keep cooking sake for years, never been sick. It's alcohol and salt so I can't see it being dangerous.

Even when my bottle of white vermouth gets yellower and yellower as the years pass, I don't worry about it.

When one has a doubt about any substance, it is often better to abstain, if only for psychosomatic reasons. I have been in many situations where something a bit doubtful was consumed -- the people who thought it was just fine had absolutely no problems and those who were worried about having poisoned themselves got sick.
Then again, we all have different physical constitutions as well.
