Cheery you need to sew your name and phone number into your gloves. Maybe they’d find their way home to you.
Thanks for the scab-management tips, bixa. I always have Carmen on hand but would not have thought to use it for this. I have not ever seen arnica gel in local drugstores-do you have to go to a natural foods type place?

Kimby, I'd ask at the regular drugstore since that's probably more convenient, but if not, check out the health food store.
Carmex is so wonderful for so many things. You can also put it on your pet if the animal has a place it's licking. It won't want to lick the Carmex plus the salve has healing properties. Even though I've never had a cold sore, I slather Carmex on my mouth every night at bedtime. It doesn't have that weird waxy feel of chapstick & lasts all night -- a particular boon in the dry season.

I lose a hat about every year. I misplaced the one I forgot to lose last year. Not cold enough that I look for it.

I am ever grateful to you ladies for putting me on to the arnica gel. I had another fall last week an landed heavily on my knees. No real damage done but the bruising was vivid. The arnica was very effective.I have never been one to bruise much so I will check with GP to see if any of my meds can cause blood thinning.
Kimby, that glasses-into-nose injury is awful, isn't it? Have you got black eyes from it? I hope you heal quickly.

Fortunately no black eyes, though I considered that possibility. Maybe my forehead took most of the blow.

I found arnica gel at our Osco pharmacy on the shelves with pain meds. Will give it a try next time I bang myself up.

Once you try it, you'll never be without it again. Trust me -- I'm clumsy, so I know.

I'll have to get some. I'm also clumsy. Wonder why, when I can do very fine graphic work.

Visited the dentist yesterday for a long-overdue cleaning. For years, I’ve had dental aches/accidents that got me into their chair pretty frequently to fix those issues, but since a piece broke off my back molar in March, all pain immediately dissipated, so I never got around to scheduling a cleaning.
The good news is that my home dental hygiene has been sufficient to keep gum and decay issues at bay. The bad news is that the broken molar needs a crown ($1300-1500!). The worse news is that an upper tooth has an abscess that was asymptomatic (dentist surmised it has been draining rather than festering), But isn’t fixable by a root canal because the root has fractured. I’m being referred to the oral surgeon for another implant.
Aging teeth are a b*tch!

Yuck.
I was at the dentist (actually the dental school) today for the next step of getting an implant. I saw a new student who decided to clean my teeth on a whim, just because he can't stand the sight of tartar. Actually, there wasn't much since it only took a couple of minutes and from what I could tell, it was all on the inner side of the teeth (only the incisors), which I can't see anyway no matter how much I brush. I only ever see the front side.
I wasn't sure what else was planned but in the end he took the imprint of my lower teeth with the green goop. Some sort of progress seems to have been made, because it was not too horrible compared to past green goop events (still horrible anyway). The dentist told me that it is actually made out of algae.
He said that was all for today, although I would have preferred it if he had done the upper imprint, too. The implant is going in the upper part anyway. He said he'd text me, maybe in a week, for the next event. Can't complain for the parts that I don't have to pay for... (The implanted crown itself will run about 2000 euros total for all visits and procedures, and my health insurance will cover about 600 of that.) Mr. Google tells me that the price in the United States for an implant is between $3000 and $4500 so I will not complain.

I had a tooth crowned last year. Had to undergo small surgery before - they cut some bone so that the gum would be lower and the crown could be above its level. Cost more than 2000 euros for sure but I paid about 500 after refunds from health care and insurance.

Crowns all by themselves are almost covered for me, but an implant is a different story.

$15,000! You can buy a CAR for that! A really cheap piece-of-junk car, but a car nonetheless.

I hate reading an advert for something I might be interested in and it says "POA". Sod you, I'm definitely not interested now. I'll go somewhere else where the price isn't a secret and made up for each person asking. I hate looking for something, say accommodation, car rental etc, and the costs/price aren't on the website or readily available without having to ask for them.

The whole point of advertising is to catch & hold your attention. The arrogance of expecting a potential customer to expend time and energy on pointless extra steps is stupidly counter-productive.

Mr. Kimby told me this weekend that he has no further interest in travel, other than to places with familiar beds and where we can cook familiar foods, like our home on Sanibel Island, Florida, and his parents condo on a Wisconsin lake, and our lake cottage in Montana. I was gobsmacked. On the upside, he has said he doesn’t mind at all if I want to travel with my sisters or girlfriends, so it could be worse. After the idyllic week-long stay on St. Croix, USVI, with my sisters last week, I’m eager for another sister outing.

Don't forget to leave Mr. Kimby in a nursing home. It sounds like he is just about ready.

In Mr. Kimby’s defense, I may have overreacted to his comments on travel. He likes seeing new places, just feels we already travel plenty between house and lake cottage when we’re in MT, and with 2-3 trips per year to Florida and 2 trips to Wisconsin.
What he ISNT a fan of is long flights, cramped seats on planes (he’s tall), food poisoning, stressful driving on foreign roads, etc. He may travel again, but meanwhile is fine with me traveling with my sisters and girlfriends.
And no nursing home for Mr. K. Watching his Dad languish for 3 years in such a place, he wants me to take him out and shoot him, rather than consigning him to that sort of existence.

Following the other possible tangent of his reaction ("Get her out of the house."), you should be careful to give exact dates for your absences and never return early unexpectedly.
(Yes, I'm just being nasty, but you know me.)

Current trauma: We returned from the lake cottage yesterday to find that the neighborhood deer managed to wrestle the wire protective cage off our beautiful upright juniper and chewed it down to nubs of bare branches! This is war!

Do you think that you own the juniper or is it part of nature's grand scheme for pleasing wildlife?
My own trauma: I was buying oxtail at the Chinese supermarket, and the African butcher weighed it and printed the price sticker, and then he added several extra pieces to the bag. I must look old and pathetic and poor.

Do you think that you own the juniper or is it part of nature's grand scheme for pleasing wildlife? We’ve been feeding the deer for years with our landscaping. We keep trying to outsmart them with fencing and netting, but every now and then they outsmart us, causing major trauma - and expense - for replacing the chowed-on shrubs. I’ve given up on flowers in planters, which the hooved locusts regard as their own personal salad bar. My gorgeous tulips lasted only as long as it took their buds to burst open before the deer devoured every one. After a couple years of deer devastation, the bulbs simply gave up. And so did I.

Kimby, I understand this, even though my parents live in the center of the city, the deer roam the neighbourhoods at night as soon as the tulips bloom. They have gotten all of them along the front of the house the past few years but have yet to figure out how to get into the backyard past the car in the carport.

I am slowly relaxing tonight after a scary drive home. When we drove to town after dinner the roads were clear, 2 1/2 hours later when I got in the vehicle to come home, an expected wind/snow storm had begun a few hours earlier than predicted. The snow had already accumulated quickly and the roads were completely snow covered and with little traffic out and about, it was difficult to make out the lanes in the dark. I was driving cautiously but had a truck following me on the highway that was not appreciating my respect for the conditions. Once we reached a straight away he sped past me, as was his right, but I was surprised and upset about the vulgar hand gesture as he passed. The silly thing was, once he was out in front of me, he barely increased his speed. I guess he realized that he no longer had the benefit of following my tail lights or tracks and perhaps he then understood my driving speed was in accordance with the conditions. This stretch of highway is notorious for speeding (and accidents), tonight I was just unlucky to have one of those idiots behind me.

I had to drive about 300 km one night and it was pea souper fog and twisting mountain roads I did not know. A pick-up passed me and I appreciated the extra lights he had. He stopped at the next hamlet and delivered a pile of newspapers then rushed past me again. This happened a couple times and I twigged he would be doing the Midnight Edition run straight to my destination. He twigged I was keeping up by following his light as I backed off at each stop and let him go first.
As dawn lit up the fog it was good to have his tracks to follow until the fog lifted. I raced to the front and he came into the town 5 minutes later. I thanked him for his help and he said he was delighted to have some company on the nightly run.
