Wait a minute. Workers, hear me out. As your union rep in this place I think this situation needs further investigation and maybe action from a stop work meeting to withdrawal of our labour.
Sister Cheery, at her own expense time and lack of sleep, made a special treat in the expectation that it was to be distributed to other workers on an equal basis. As usual the workers were overlooked with Management commandeering the entire consignment for their own pleasure. This was further a psychological hazard for Sister Cheery in that the items in question were intended for a celebration of the departure a member of the Management Team.
Does this give Management the right to take all the treat and deprive us of a portion of Sister Cheery's skill? I say No. It has been arranged for a meeting to be held 1pm Today. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided by the Management Team.

So no-one turned up for the stop work meeting and the union rep folded his papers as always, and silently stole away.

Well...to be fair the colleague leaving wasn't a biomedical scientist but a nurse who's job was to liaise between the lab and the wards...so she was based in the office. Lab staff were told that food ( others took in stuff too) was available in there but they were too busy to go and grab stuff. I still think that office peeps should have saved the lab staff some goodies... Bixa..I would have saved you one dearie...but it would be a bit stale by the time I see you my OH has his financial advisor round today (nothing exciting...just his pension investments) and he expects cake every time he comes round had a lemon drizzle in the oven by 0700 !

Too funny, only you Bixa, only you could come up with something like that. The 2 single most special departing gifts I received upon leaving a job were 1.) a cassette tape of a variety of individual songs that each patient (on a psych ward ) chose that reminded them of me. It was priceless and so beautiful and funny. (it was inside of a tape player that was stolen during a home burglary and infuriates me to this day). The other was a patchwork quilt that consisted of multiple squares that each patient and all the staff members on the unit drew with fabric marker a message, design etc. expressly communicating their sentiments about me. Also, very beautiful and some downright hysterical in some cases.

Those are really exceptional gifts you got, Casimira and sincerely meaningful. If I remember correctly, didn't you always use a "left-handed" mug a former patient made for you? My trauma is that I have a cucuzza perfectly ready to pick and darling little long skinny eggplants coming along nicely, along with some heirloom tomatoes. Why a trauma? I'm leaving on a trip and won't be here to enjoy them. In other garden-related traumata, the @#%^&*! cutter ants viciously attacked my climbing rose, which was full and beautiful yesterday.

My petty trauma is that our wild cherry tree has never looked as good as it did this spring, in full bloom and 30 feet tall. I told myself to take a photo and didn't. Next morning, 6 inches of heavy wet snow had snapped off two trunks and broken the tops out of two more. Devastation!

Just take a tissue and wipe the crap away.
Yesterday, I was pretty disgusted by the walk-up price of the Heathrow Express. I will stick to the Picadilly line next time I fly.
But what took the cake was the arrival at CDG. We were trapped in the plane for 30 minutes because the jetway was out of order and could not connect to the plane. I must admit that the staff made numerous announcements about the progression of the situation and sounded just as pissed off as the passengers. (after all, 30 minutes is a HUGE amount of time for a flight that only takes an hour) They wisely found someone to blame: "The jetway is administered by the Paris Airports Authority so we have to wait until they send a technician to solve the problem." We finally got off the plane, and I knew that the Eurostar would be my choice for future trips even when it is more expensive.

Well. Yesterday I took the dog for our customary mid morning 5K walk...along the main road, across a playing field, through the little nature reserve and onto the old municipal golf course. The golf club closed years ago and the area has been allowed to return to nature (for now..no doubt there will be building going on before long). I have to scramble through a gap in the fence onto the golf course and head along a muddy path through trees and bushes to get onto the course itself. The path is riddled with tree stumps, roots and puddles and yours truly tripped and fell sprawled in the nettles. Surprisingly the dog didn't run off but ambled over dragging his lead I wasn't hurt or particularly muddy so we carried on with our walk. Not having learned my lesson off we went again today. All went well until on the way home my foot went into a dip in the grassy path and I turn e d my ankle. Ouch. I limped home and put ice on my ankle...I already have chunky ankles but the injured one is now puffed right up and I can hardly walk on it Sooooo I have to rest it....going on a walking holiday next week (23rd) too....sigh...

Oh HELL, Cheery! Please, please send someone in your house out right this minute to get you some arnica gel (Boots carries it). It will really help with the pain and swelling and will speed your recovery.

I've been reliably informed that a gin and tonic will do the trick. I've sent OH out for arnica gel and have had an ice cold dressing on it...it's elevated too. I can still walk on it a bit but expect it to be painful for a couple of days. Still have to walk the dog but OH might take over at least for tomorrow..
Thank you for your advice xxx

I told the news vendor "I don't see the Sunday paper on display."
He said, "that's because it's Saturday."
The mind is going. He did try to reassure by saying that this happens a lot to all sorts of people.

Sorry to read about your ankle Cheery! Mick's RICE advice should help. Perhaps wrapping it when you go on your walking holiday next week might help and ice again at night after your walks. Hope you can enjoy your holiday!

Cheers medears....tried taking Django for a little walk but he was attacked by a huge bull mastiff (off the lead) on the field...we were both a bit shaken. Django wears a harness for his lead and I think that saved him from injury as basically the other dog went for the back of his neck. The other dog owner was quick to come over and drag his dog away, apologising profusely. I checked Django over and he seemed OK, so we hobbled around for a bit and then came home. Unfortunately my ankle is now swollen again so I'll probably stay off it for a bit...
..after the incident we trotted away with Django looking for reassurance which I duly gave...then when the big dog had left the field Django puffed himself up and gave the retreating dog a piece of his mind...little big man so he is...

He did try to reassure by saying that this happens a lot to all sorts of people. Join the club... Yesterday I woke up with a start and remembered (or, so I thought) that I had company coming for brunch. I began doing some of the prep work when one of the guests called to confirm the time. I said well, I'm in the midst of starting the blah, blah, blah, when she said, C. you do realize it's tomorrow (Sunday isn't it?). Thank goodness she phoned...

The hibiscus plant that I rescued from my mother's room 3 weeks after she died, wilted and at wit's end, has been flourishing in my apartment, especially in the hot weather. In fact, it has been flourishing too much to the point of almost completely blocking the window. I have already cut off a couple of branches in the past, but today I did so again. It had refused to bloom for two years and I was pretty much in despair. As soon as I had cut off a big stalk today, I saw that it had two flower buds developing on it. Shit! I checked all of the other branches but have not seen any other buds.

My foolproof way of coaxing hibiscus plants to bloom is to cut up a banana peel into small pieces and with a fork stick them in the soil. If the banana peel is too large use only half of it, put the remainder in the freezer for future feedings. They love potassiam Frangipani also responds kindly to the same. Good luck.!!

We are in Florida now emptying the last of three homes that my in laws had full of stuff and memories. When MIL was hospitalized we gave her sister-in-law (and neighbor in the continuing care community) her purse "for safekeeping" until she got out of the nursing home. She never got out, dying on Memorial Day, less than a month ago.
We just returned from a short visit with Mr. Kimby's aunt and she proudly presented us with an empty purse! For some reason, she had decided that for security reasons, she should take all the contents (which had already been edited by Mr. Kimby to be only the important stuff) to the shredder. Drivers license, Social Security card, photos, address book, gone! Also a ratty old wallet containing little cash, but with a secret compartment that held $100, gone! What was she THINKING! ?! And her 50's something son, HELPED her do this! Neither of them thought to call us about what to do with the purse in her safekeeping. SMH...
