Belgium is a land of delicate civilisation that extends even to its beaches. Dikes and seawalls protect each resort, which are all connected by the tramway from La Panne to Knokke. Beach cabins and lounge chair can be found everywhere. Even the sun has been considerately hidden behind eternal clouds to prevent excessive exposure to UV rays. In spite of this, there are still trillions of grains of sand on the beach, as free as on any other beach to sneak into your shoes and between your toes, and they just won't leave. They will stick to the arch of your foot even if you rub it frenetically against the calf of your other leg, an operation that requires energy and delicate balance. I was amazed to see a remarkable Belgian invention this weekend upon my return to my mother's country. It is ingenious, practical, functional, sturdy and thrifty -- just like the Belgians. It is a sand brush sturdily attached to beach chairs.

Channelling Magritte? www.dekusttram.be/pages2/home.htmlOr perhaps Delvaux, although you'd need a voluptuous semi-nude woman and a memento mori or two alongside the flying tram.
