I like listening to young Indonesians chatting in what they call Bahasa Campur..."All mixed up" language. They may start in English but slip into using Indonesian for some of the grammar. Add a dash of Balinese or other local words and sprinkle the lot with the rapidly growing slang that is creating a new language among the young people. All these are mixed into the conversation which sounds so effortless.

the dog is barking constantly, shaking, dribbling..leaping around the furniture Cheery, have you tried the "thunder jacket" or a variation of it for Django? I don't have one, but do have a sweater I put on Oliver, my dog who is freaked by fireworks. He outgrew it a long time ago, but apparently it's the compression that works to calm the dog. He also has his special fireworks spot -- a little throw rug under the dining table right next to my computer desk.

Yes..Django has a thunder jacket and it does comfort him initially. I think that if we lived in a more sparsely populated area it would be fine...but in the city it's getting totally out of hand. Every night there are constant loud bangs, pops and fizzles. We live in a pretty densely populated place, a scant 3 miles from the city centre where there are several halls of residence and student flats that serve the universities here...so even if only a small percentage of the population are setting off fireworks its invasive.
It will pass.

Australia wide the law is that apart from hand held "sparklers", all fireworks are banned. For special occasions...New Year, religious celebrations etc, a timed display may take place with highly qualified pyro-technicians displaying their craft. The colossal Sydney event, staged over the Harbour from 7 barges anchored inline up the reaches of the river has the last 5 minutes when the Bridge becomes a sheet of golden water-fall, In the country towns the locals have saved in their budget enough to pay the pyro bloke for 10 minutes of bangs and flares.

My parents' Lucas terrier was terrified of any kind of loud noise. Basically this just entailed thunderstorms since nothing ever happened in that village. You could always find her shaking behind the toilet, but at least she always trusted her human protector and would come out from there as long as she knew that you would protect her.

We lost Vadrouille once when he ran away from a beach during fireworks. We looked for him quite a long time and when we admitted defeat we found him waiting at the car.

We must be on the home stretch now...hopefully after the weekend the fireworks should stop at least until the new year. Bonfire night was a bit 'end of the world' constant booming, fizzling, whistling and banging...Wednesday was just as bad. Last night was loud initially but at least it calmed down around 11pm...
Django's been barking himself into a frenzy when the fireworks are going off...despite the music, thunder vest, calm owners, cosy place to hide etc etc...refuses to go walkies in the day and when we DO manage to drag him out he's asking to be picked up all the time. It will soon be over for another year.

You've saved a packet then.

A packet or a bundle?
USAnians would say you saved a bundle!
Packet applies to cigarettes, though always abbreviated to “pack”.
And “deck” applies to playing cards, not cigs. Or the wooden elevated outside porch where you SMOKE those cigarettes that cost you a bundle!

I find the imbroglio about the commercial boycott of products made in the Jewish colonies in Cisjordanie very interesting.
Basically Europe bans these products because the colonies are illegal.
Israël disagrees.
USA reverted their position and declared that the colonies were legal.
So now Israel will say Europe discriminate without legal ground and will appeal to their US friends to boycott us since US and Israel are in bed since always.
Wonder how this will end. First result is that we fracture once more the position between USA and Europe.

At least for those people with an extensive and somewhat scattered family, I must admit that Thanksgiving is one of the only American holidays for which I have a soft spot. It is not really religious, and it is not really commercial, and it really is an important period for gathering together, even if only once a year. Movies have shown us that it is also a time for smouldering disputes to resurface (generally helped by alcohol), but that is part of family life as well. It clears the air for Christmas and New Year's in many cases, so it is really quite useful.
For people without a family or close friends, it kind of sucks, though.

But the turkey dinner is great nonetheless, and more leftovers with fewer guests.

Is the turkey obligatory or are food atheists allowed to deviate?

My family stopped eating turkey at Thanksgiving around 1970 when it was decided by general consensus that none of us really liked it. We usually had something like crab instead.

I've always loved the idea of the festival of Thanksgiving altho two such family feast days so close together must be onerous.
I love turkey.

I love an oven-roasted turkey (as opposed to turkey cold cuts that are tasteless), but can’t eat it too many meals in a row as it’s a bit hard to digest.
Even when it’s just the two of us, we have turkey with the trimmings: bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole and Waldorf Salad... I used to make the cranberry orange relish my mom made, but no one seems to eat it so I quit making it, though it’s very pretty and I like it. It’s also good on turkey sandwiches after the big day.
When the carcass has been picked clean, I make soup with it, about the only from-scratch soup I make.

You should try and make a go at making a gumbo Kimby. With a good sausage such as kielbasa it's the perfect alternative to just regular soup.

Thanks casi. Do you have a recipe, or just throw things together?

To be perfectly honest Kimby, I have never made a gumbo.
I know, shame on me but, when you have a chef in the house that has mastered making it, I just never learned or bothered to try.
He does not have a recipe written down and he never makes it exactly the same.
I recommend scoping out the NYT. They printed a recipe recently. Also, browse around. There are a gazillion of them.
The trick is learning how to make a roux and the rest is pretty basic intuition.
Sorry, I wish I could be of more assistance.

I’ve made a roux for white sauces, but never for gumbo. 2 T flour stirred into 2 T melted butter, whisk in 1 cup milk and heat till bubbly and thickened, stirring constantly.
Does the gumbo roux contain a liquid other than milk?

Sounds good - I don't think I have had gumbo but I always associate it with jambalaya which I have made and enjoy.
Anyway ...Happy Thanksgiving for Thursday to all who celebrate it then.

No turkey here. We had chicken rolls with sage and bacon, Italian risotto cooked with spinach, mixed green salad, and apple pie. All made from scratch. All delicious. And now, almost all gone.
According to the shared, planning calendar someone started, we’re having turkey for Christmas. I’ll pass. I’m not a turkey fan.
