tod - You could do Parc Floral and then take a bus from there to the garden and after the garden head for a stroll around the Lac des Minimes. After, you could head over to to see the Pavillon Baltard across from the Nogent RER station (one of the old pavillions from the Les Halles marketplace) then you could stroll down to the river and go for a walk through the Île-de-Beauté (late 19th century villas on the banks of the river) and continue strolling further on the Marne. Here's a link to a facebook photo album the Mrs. made last fall when she "discovered" the garden and then did a stroll around the Lac des Minimes and then along the river: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2148216859629.117830.1072556210&type=1&l=83d383ec5b

Thanks FMT for that suggestion - Please help me a little more as our last visit to Parc Floral got us all mixed up with buses going in the oposite direction to where we intended and we wasted a lot of time.
So, go to the Chateau de Vincennes metro stop - walk past the chateau and go across the road into Parc Floral. Would the bus we need to take to the Garden of Des.(Agronomie Tropical) be at the Esplanade St Louis? And where do we get off?

tod - The entrance to the Parc Floral is on Route de la Pyramide just about 1 block down from the big square in front of the château. When you finish in the Parc you take bus 112 right in front of the entrance to the Parc (walk across the street) in the direction of La Varenne RER. Get off at the stop Carrefour de Beauté. Then walk along the road (with the woods on your left) on avenue de la Belle Gabrielle until you see the entrance on your left. After you finish in the Jardin go out the exit (thre is only 1 way in and out) and take a left and then look for a path on your left. This will lead to the Lac des Minimes. This link will give you all kinds of info about the Bois de Vincennes and on the top left is a map you can download of the Bois: www.paris.fr/loisirs/paris-au-vert/bois-de-vincennes/p6566If you use google maps you'll notice the Nogent-sur-Marne RER station only 1-2 blocks from the entrance of the Jardin d'Agronomie. Across the street is avenue Victor Hugo and if you walk down it one block you'll arrive at the Pavillon Baltard. Continue walking downhill and at the bottom on your left you'll see the Chemin de la Île-de-Beauté on your left if you want to see the villas. You could also take a right and walk along the river banks like the Mrs. did in her facebook photo album. You could walk right on to the Joinville-le-Pont RER station if you wanted. You can use google maps to find it. Of course, how much you do depends on how much walking you want to do. Hope that helps.

Those old photos are amazing - The elderly gents seem to be studying those bare breasted women from Africa most intently - Not surprised as they are in pristine condition.

The garden photos are beautiful! What a hidden gem. I'm so glad you posted this, I don't think I would have ever heard about it otherwise.
The old photos are fascinating, but with my modern sensibilities, I can't help but think that putting people on display is exploitative, even if they are compensated. I'm sure the organizers had anthropological goals, but even so, it's an unsavory idea.

A little more than a year has passed, so it seemed like a good time to go and see if anything has changed. Frankly, I was happy to see that there is not much new.

I am so excited you came back to this thread!!! I read it last year and was thinking about it this weekend but could for the world not remember what the name was :-) Is there any way to take a bus there? ? (From Hotel de Ville/Cite/Chatelet) I may just have to explore it myself one morning if the best way is the RER.... just curious ! I am imagining it being very cool (literally and figuratively) in the winter time !!

The buses that go the closest leave from Château de Vincennes. I believe that the 112 has the closest stop, but the 114 also has a stop that is not too far away. To get to Château Vincennes from Paris without taking the metro, there is bus line 46 (Gare du Nord-Château de Vincennes). www.ratp.fr/informer/pdf/orienter/f_plan.php?nompdf=46&loc=bus_paris/

Thanks so much - this may be too much hassle for the cowboy, so I probably will attempt to go there by myself one morning while he lounges in bed ;-) I saw the park opens at 9:30 a.m. so looks like a good trip to do right after breakfast. It is definitely on the list..... we'll see if I'll get around to it. Our plan for this Christmas trip will be "do the unusual" !! ;D

SO beautiful! It's as though you have your own private mysterious jungle temple complex. Although it's nice to see that handsome building in use and that other people are enjoying the area, I can't help but hope that it doesn't become too discovered and groomed. Absolutely wonderful new look at the place ~ thanks.

The garden is hard to find on google maps since so much of it is tree-covered now, but the experimental garden plots do show up.
It's refreshing to see some places that are left to grow wild in such a city as manicured as Paris is.

Boy, you even took good videos back then, Kerouac! Really cool to see it when it was fresh and news. They could have called it "Streamline Moderne Colonialism".

It wouldn't be hard to imagine the little people, the sprites and elves and Earth spirits of the fairy tales meeting here to dance and gossip about the "old days". Near the area of the statues would be a fine place for their party.
The whole garden has a feeling of other-worldly guardianship.

It's nice when the authorities understand that it wouldn't be appropriate to "fix everything up." Actually, it is basically the same experts who decided not to restore everything at Angkor Wat, particularly Ta Prohm. I am pretty sure that as soon as spring is firmly established, I will be drawn back there. (both to this garden and to Ta Prohm, in an ideal world )

I guess as people are limited to a 10-km radius around home, more and more wilder areas of Paris will be discovered and filled with people.

A sign informed me that the RER station of Fontenay-sous-Bois was only 800 metres away to the left, so that's where I went.

So many memories for me - so much looks the same and yet so much is different. You must have been quite tired when you had finished all that walking.

It must be spring, we've been brought back to this exotic corner of the Bois de Vincennes. Looks as lovely in its disheveled way as ever, and more popular as well. I suppose it'll be all gentrified, restored, and lose much of its character before too long. Thank you for the return visit.
